VESTAVIA HILLS — Hudson Gilman homered twice and drove in five runs, and defending Class 6A state champion Oxford beat Vestavia Hills 11-1 in Travis Janssen’s debut as the Yellow Jackets’ head coach on Friday.

The Yellow Jackets followed up with a 9-5 victory in the second game.

Gilman’s day in the first game included a grand slam as part of Oxford’s eight-run first inning. He also hit a solo shot in the fourth inning. He was 3-for-3 and scored three runs on the day.

Carter Johnson singled and drove in two runs. TIde Gann and Nich Richardson each hit a double and drove in a run.

R.J. Brooks got the win, allowing two hits, one earned run and two walks with three strikeouts in a complete-gave, five-inning outing.

In the second game, Johnson went 3-for-5 and Richardson 2-for-2. Each drove in three runs.

Richardson got the win in the second game, allowing five hits and two earned runs with two strikeouts in four innings.

“It was a great night,” Janssen said. “Very good starting pitching, clutch hitting. We obviously jumped on them big early on in the first game, so that game had a different feel, but definitely, it was positive. The second game, we scored runs late to win that one.

“A really complete night. Really proud of the starting pitching, and our returning players did a great job of leading the team.”
