OXFORD –
The last time Oxford and Spring Garden saw each other on the basketball floor it was in the Champions Girls Thanksgiving Classic title game and Spring Garden rallied from an early deficit to win crown.

Oxford coach Melissa Bennett was real interested to see how her team would react in the rematch Tuesday night and this time the Lady Jackets flipped the script.

Lean Taylor scored 23 points, 15 in the second half, and Justice Woods (12) and Xai Whitfield (11) also scored in double figures as the Lady Jackets rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to win 64-58.

“We finished more around the basket and shot well from the free throw line late,” Bennett said. “Leah was money to close it out.”

Taylor was 7-for-8 from the free throw line the fourth quarter.

Spring Garden hit seven of its 10 3-pointers in the first half to open a 34-29 lead, but Oxford held the Lady Panthers to only two field goals in the third quarter and six baskets in the second half.

After a listless first half that looked like they didn’t want to be there, the Lady Cubs turned up the intensity in the second half and won going away.

The Lady Cubs trailed by five at halftime after hitting only three field goals – all 3-pointers – in the first half. But they opened the second half of a 16-3 run, eventually outscoring the Lady Golden Eagles 23-8 in the third quarter and 35-13 in the second half.

“The difference was the intensity,” Alexandria coach Craig Kiker said. “We really didn’t look like we wanted to play (in the first half). I got mad at them and challenged them to pick up the intensity.”

Ashley Phillips, who had only three free throws at halftime, had eight straight points and 10 overall in Lady Cubs’ second-half start. She finished with a game-high 18 points, nine rebounds and seven steals for the game.

Jacksonville, a young team still trying to find itself, had a lot go right in the first half. The Lady Golden Eagles slowed the tempo, hit shots and rebounded whenever Alexandria missed, opening leads of 10-1 and 18-8.

The only field goals the Lady Cubs managed in the half were a pair of 3-pointers by Jill Cockrell and one by Jordyn Walker. Jacksonville started losing its magic, though, when point guard Ashley Grant left the game with an ankle injury.
