Tigers’ Simmons 4A top player

By East Alabama Sports Today

Talladega’s Kobe Simmons was named Class 4A boys basketball Player of the Year, while the other two East Alabama Sports Today area finalists were shut out in the other classifications.

Simmons led the Tigers to a fourth straight trip to the Final Four and a runner-up finish this season under recently retired head coach Chucky Miller after leading them to their first state the year before.

He averaged 19.2 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists. He had 16 points and 14 rebounds in the Tigers’ 68-61 loss to Williamson in the state championship game.

Piedmont’s Alex Odam, the only freshman on any of the all-state teams, was a finalist in Class 3A. Jacksonville Christian’s Chase Vinson was a finalist in Class 1A.

Pike County’s Andres Burney was the 3A Player of the Year and Lindsay Lane’s Tommy Murr, the state’s all-time leading scorer, was the 1A Player of the Year. Burney averaged 26.6 ppg and 16.1 rpg and blocked 200 shots. Murr averaged 44.3 ppg and finished his career with 5,716 points.

The other winners were Mountain Brook guard Colby Jones (7A), Pinson Valley guard Kam Woods (6A), Fairfield forward Reginald Perry (5A), Calhoun guard J.D. Davison (2A) and Evangel Christian guard Tyree Curry (AISA).

The winners were announced via the internet because the Mr./Miss Basketball banquet was canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak. Alabama’s Mr. Basketball will be announced the same way April 4.
