When the season first began White Plains basketball coach Chris Randall admitted he was really concerned about his team’s ability to play defense.

The Wildcats didn’t have the greatest mindset about it, but they could score the basketball, which could get them through some nights. Now the worm has turned and it’s their defensive posture has them winning games.

It came about again Friday night when Wildcats took down Lincoln 54-41 to reach the championship game of the Champions Christmas Classic.

The Wildcats will face undefeated Springville in tonight’s 7:30 p.m. final and Randall suspects it will take their most well-rounded effort to keep them in it long enough to have a shot in the fourth quarter.

“Tonight just keeps reinforcing what we’re trying to teach the guys, that everything’s got to start on the defensive end,” Randall said. “Coming into the season, when practice started, I was really, really concerned defensively. I didn’t like the mentality, but I thought we could really score it.

“Now, we’re not scoring it great, we’re struggling shooting, but we’re rebounding and playing defense and limiting turnovers. Those three things don’t take a night off because those are choices. I feel like we’ve done a good job about that.”

When it came to their defensive effort against the Golden Bears, the spotlight clearly fell on Jaden Chatman. He drew the assignment on Lincoln’s Brian Garrett and held the player who went for 32 the night before to just half that total and nothing in the fourth quarter. Two of the baskets Garrett did get in the second half came when he made a steal and layup.

“I thought Jaden did an outstanding job on him,” Randall said.

Not to be overlooked were the four charges courageously taken by Matthew Clay.

Although it was the defense that won them praises, the Wildcats did have their share of offense. Sophomore Brody Baker came off the bench – as usual – and scored a game-high 25 points. He pumped in 20 during the middle two quarters, going 10-of-13 from the floor.

“He’s been our most consistent offensive player, without a doubt,” Randall said. “He’s been steady, his decision making has been really good, but he’s one of the best teammates we have. He says I’ll do whatever you tell me to. He’s just so team-first. To watch him grow up has been a lot of fun.”

Carrollton (Ga.) Holiday Tournament
Jackets’ streak reaches 8

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Roc Taylor led three Oxford scorers in double figures with 21 points and the Yellow Jackets extended their winning streak to eight games in a 73-45 rout of Gainesville to reach the finals of the Carrollton (Ga.) Holiday Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets will play Therrell, currently ranked No. 2 in Class 2A in Georgia, for the championship.

Therrell erased a seven-point halftime deficit to beat 6A No. 5 South Paulding 50-47. The Panthers were led by RaSean Frederick’s 19 points and nine rebounds and Robbie Armbrester’s 14 points and 10 boards.

“This is a very strong team that’s ranked in their class,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “It will be a great challenge for us as a group.”

The Yellow Jackets (11-3) have weathered most of the storms they’ve faced this season with balanced scoring and unselfish play across the board, and Friday night was no exception.

In addition to Taylor’s big game, the Jackets got 16 points from Zondrick Garrett and 10 from Eugene Leonard. Justin Moore added nine points and Kobe Warren eight. Garrett scored 14 of his points in the first half as Oxford opened a 44-17 lead. Taylor had seven in the first quarter and 14 in the second half.

The Red Elephants had no scorers in double figures.

“Defensively we seem to be clicking,” VanMeter said. “Our communication and connectivity are demonstrated through our defensive effort.

“It was another example of our team working as one on offense to create opportunities for each other. Balanced scoring all over and great unselfish play led to several guys being very productive.”

The winning streak is the longest in VanMeter’s memory in his tenure.

Unbeaten Piedmont pulls away in fourth

HOKES BLUFF – Piedmont used a 13-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter to break open a close game and pull away from Glencoe 56-42 to remain undefeated and reach the finals of the Patrick Ball Memorial Classic.

Alex Odam scored 10 of his game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs, who only led by going entering the quarter.

“Our effort was better in the second half on the defensive end,” Piedmont coach JoJo Odam said. “Carl Myers got three steals in a row and that helped get us going. We also had a couple guys who were in foul trouble who did a good job of playing through it and stayed in the game.”
