Jacksonville Christian girls coach Katie Bryant knew exactly what it was going to take for her team to get through its big area game with Donoho Monday night.

The Lady Thunder was going to have to hit the boards and hit them hard.

That’s exactly what they did in the second half and the effort propelled them to a 53-46 victory to stay a step ahead of the play-in game down the road in their area tournament.

At halftime I told them we weren’t getting very many offensive rebound at all,” Bryant said. “And I told them if we’re going to win this game it’s going to have to be on the offensive boards because Donoho can shoot the ball and we were struggling so we had to have second-chance points. We tried to make that a priority in the second half and I think they did that.”

The Lady Thunder turned to Sidney Hancock, their lone senior, and she led the charge. Hancock had 15 rebounds in the game, six on the offensive glass, to go with eight points. All told, JCA rebounders pulled down 15 offensive boards.

“She’s definitely our anchor,” Bryant said of Hancock. “In games like this if we don’t lean on her we’re in trouble.”

Early on, it was a seventh-grader who kept the Lady Thunder in the game. Karli Barnwell hit three 3-pointers in the first half. She hit two in a 9-0 run that opened the second quarter and carried JCA to a 30-25 halftime lead. Barnwell scored all of her 12 points in the first half.

“We’re one of those teams that has to have the next man up and that mentality and that’s what we’re trying to teach them,” Bryant said. “We’re very inexperienced, but we’re getting a lot of hustle and step-up from them.”

Kylie Cupp led JCA with 15 points. Rebekah Carter had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Anastasia O’Neill led Donoho with 15 points. O’Neill’s basket got her team within two with 2:50 play, but the Lady Falcons couldn’t connect on the tying points over their next four possessions and JCA was able to pull away.
