OHATCHEE — The big game in Calhoun County this week is on the Creekbank where two top 10 teams will battle for the Class 3A Region 5 championship.

Ohatchee steps onto its biggest stage in years when it hosts Piedmont in a much-anticipated battle of unbeatens. When the statewide prep football poll was released Tuesday night, the Indians (7-0, 4-0) were No. 7 in Class 3A, while defending state champion Piedmont (8-0, 5-0) is No. 1, the spot it has held since the season opened.

Ohatchee officials said they would open additional gates for the game and gates would open at 5 p.m. – a half-hour earlier than normal. There also will be additional security on hand for an anticipated larger crowd.

The last time Ohatchee played a No. 1-ranked team at home was 2012; it lost to Fultondale 36-7 in Week 2. The Indians have played the No. 1 five other times – all between 1984 and 1993 — with the only win coming over Piedmont in 1984 on the road in Week 9, 12-7.

Piedmont has won the last eight meetings and nine of the last 10.

“The season has meant so much to our school and community,” Ohatchee principal Bobby Tittle said. “No matter the outcome of the game, our team has performed extremely well on the field. Piedmont is a great opponent and we look forward to a great game.”

Within the program, the Indians are trying to keep things as normal as possible.

“I just can’t make this game bigger than the other games,” Ohatchee coach Scott Martin said. “The kids, the crowd, the coaches, everyone know it is (a big game), so I don’t have to do that.”

Meanwhile, Oxford remains No. 3 in Class 6A, blocked by the bloc of Blount and Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa.

Jacksonville jumps to No. 6 (from No. 9) in Class 4A, while Handley breaks into the poll for the first time this season at No. 9.

For Jacksonville, it’s the Golden Eagles’ highest ranking since a No. 5 on Sept. 23, 2014. Their all-time high was No. 4 on Sept. 30, 2014.

Etowah jumps up to No. 3 in Class 5A, while Clay Central leaps all the way to No. 5 (from No. 9)

In Class 1A, Spring Garden remained No. 3 and Wadley remained at No. 6.
