The White Plains basketball team doesn’t try to break 100 when it plays. In fact, Wildcats coach Chris Randall would prefer to win games with half that many points. But the Wildcats have to do what they can to keep up.

Playing a team that wanted to play at a fast pace and firing at will from behind the 3-point arc, the Wildcats produced the most points in a game in Randall’s 20-year tenure. They hit 12 3-pointers and put six scorers in double figures to run past Ranburne 97-54.

“I hate we almost scored 100, but they play faster than us,” Randall said. “They played really fast and trapped some and they made a bunch of 3s, so it produced a lot of long rebounds and possessions. We shared the ball really well and scored a few in transition.”

Brody Baker led the Wildcats with 15 points. Walker Osteen and Kahlil Williams each had 13 and Tucker Pearson, Jesse Hubbard and Garrett Wilson all came off the bench to score 12.

Seven of the nine Wildcats who scored hit at least one 3-pointer. Pearson had four. Ranburne hit 11 3s among its 20 field goals with leading scorer Carson Riddle (20 points) throwing in six.

“There were a lot of possessions,” Randall said. “They shot it quick and we shot it quick back. It was a track meet.”

The Wildcats’ previous single-game high under Randall was 95 points in a subregion tournament game at Ider.

Bulldogs getting back on track

Three games have passed since Anniston lost in the finals of the Calhoun County Tournament, but the Bulldogs hadn’t let that setback get them down.

The Bulldogs won their third game this week, getting 30 points from Malcolm Carlisle and another overall strong game from county tournament MVP Antonio Kite, and ran past visiting Plainview 84-59.

“We’re playing really good basketball,” Anniston coach Torry Brown said. “I think the second half of the county tournament (final) has carried over the last three games and we’ve got a rhythm offensively we didn’t have and hadn’t had since the beginning of the year.”

The long ball is Plainview’s forte, but Anniston hit 15 3-pointers in the game, 11 in the first half while opening a 48-29 halftime lead. Carlisle hit six in the game with Kite (16 points), Tadyn Jones (13) and Mark Toyer (11) each hitting three.

“Tonight was a team effort and Antonio was great,” Brown said. “He was brilliant passing the ball, getting guys easy shots. Defensively, he really played great. He was a real leader tonight and it made a world of difference, but everybody played well. It was just one of those nights when the ball went in, just a good night.”

Streaking Jackets get one back

PELL CITY – Oxford coach Joel Van Meter really wasn’t expecting to get Kyler Wright back on the floor this season after the junior guard suffered a gruesome leg injury six weeks ago.

But there he was, back in the Yellow Jackets’ rotation Friday and helping the streaking county champs run over Pell City 76-34 to complete their area schedule undefeated. It was their 19th straight victory.

“You get a guy back who was starting the first however many games we played to that point (of his injury), a guy who can defense, who’s a very good offensive rebounder, a guy who can score, who’s good with the ball and one of our best leaders in terms of being vocal,” Van Meter said. “You get him back at this time of the year, it can do nothing but help you.”

Wright didn’t start against the Panthers, but he was inserted in the first quarter and promptly hit a 3-pointer. He added another bucket in the second quarter and finished with five points.

“Since he’s been able to start doing anything he’s been on a mission to come back; he’s been focused,” Van Meter said. “We weren’t going to tell him he wasn’t going to play this year. I wasn’t expecting him to do anything until April, but I’m shocked. I’m pleasingly shocked.”

The Jackets (23-2) once again were led by their Big Three. Rylan Houck scored 19 points, while Roc Taylor and Justin Moore had 13 apiece. Moore and Taylor both scored six points in the first quarter, while Houck came to life in the second with 10. All 14 Jackets played and 11 scored.

ALEXANDRIA 67, SAKS 62: Landan Williams made five of seven free throws in the fourth quarter while the Valley Cubs were 11-of-16 as a team to keep Saks at arm’s length down the stretch after the Wildcats continually cut into their leads.

“We survived,” Cubs coach Jason Johnson said. “We hit a decent amount of free throws in the fourth quarter to keep them off us. We just couldn’t finish them off.”

Williams scored 11 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 31. He was 11-of-14 from the line in the game.

“That’s what a senior’s got to do,” Johnson said. “You put him on the line and he came through tonight. It was fitting since it was Senior Night. We leaned heavily on him and he came through.”

Julian Wright (15) and D’Anthony Walton (10) also scored in double figures for the Cubs. Walton scored all of his points in the third quarter

Saks placed four scorers in double figures, led by C.J. Gresham’s 18 points. Sean Parnell had 17.

The Indians basically played them even in the second half, despite Morgan hitting five of his 3s, but by then the damage was done. Trey Pesnell scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half for Ohatchee.
