ATTALLA – Sacred Heart earned a place in the Etowah Girls Holiday Tournament championship game by beating Plainview for the second time this month 56-45.

The Lady Cardinals will play second-ranked Sand Rock in the title game Saturday at 4:15 p.m. Sand Rock beat West Point 57-46.

Sacred Heart beat the Lady Bears two weeks ago by 22 points in what coach Marcus Harrell called “the biggest” win of his tenure at the time.

The Lady Cardinals didn’t jump out to as quick a start this time, falling behind 13-9 in the first quarter, but proved the first game was no upset by outscoring Plainview 23-8 over the next two quarters to take control.

Myiah Harris sparked the run to halftime with seven of her 13 points in the second quarter. Ayanna Foster had six of her 14 in the third quarter (and 11 in the second half) and Joelle Tillery had three of her four 3-pointers and 12 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter

Cleburne County Holiday Hoops Classic

HEFLIN – Weaver missed out on a chance to play for the Cleburne County Holiday Hoops Classic title when it ran out of gas late in a tight game and fell to Pelham 39-36.

The Lady Panthers were up by one in the closing seconds when Weaver missed a putback to take the lead and fouled Lauren Watts on the rebound. Watts made both free throws for her only points to put her team up by 3.

The Lady Bearcats got the ball across midcourt and coach Gary Atchley immediately called time to draw up the final play. Abby Gaines had a wide-open 3 at the buzzer to tie but the shot rimmed out.

Weaver’s Caleigh Cortez led all scorers with 20 points. The Lady Bearcats will play Winterboro in a consolation game at noon.

Glencoe Holiday Shootout

GLENCOE – Host Glencoe earned its third straight trip to its championship game – to meet Fort Payne for the third year in a row – by slipping past Oneonta 62-59.

The Lady Jackets made it their finals for the first time two years ago and beat Fort Payne for the title. The Lady Wildcats won it last year, so this will be the rubber match, so to speak.

“It’s been a pretty competitive tournament and to play another (final) against Fort Payne, it’s just a great challenge,” Glencoe coach Daniel Cook said.

Anna Beth Giles scored 13 of her 15 points in the first half as Glencoe opened a 37-27 halftime lead on Oneonta. The Lady Jackets maintained the lead throughout the game, but the Lady Redskins had a couple chances to get even in the final minute that failed to connect.

Oneonta hit eight 3-pointers in the game with leading scorer Britney Chavez accounting for six of them.

“I’m really proud of the girls for gutting out a win like that against a team like that,” Cook said.
