JACKSONVILLE – If Weaver played the way it did in the last six minutes of Friday night’s game at Pleasant Valley all the time, new coach Marcus Herbert is convinced the Bearcats would win a lot of games.

The bad thing is it took the Bearcats that long to figure that out and sometimes that might be too late.

The Bearcats beat Pleasant Valley Friday 71-44 in a game that was a lot closer for a lot longer than it looks. They finally pulled away with from the pesky Raiders with a 22-3 run over the final six minutes of the game.

“You have to treat every opponent the same,” Herbert said, sounding a lot like his predecessor and mentor, Daryl Hamby, used to sound. “You’ve got to go into each game with a game plan and try to execute it. We did it at times but there were times when we went into individual ball and that’s when we got into a little bit of trouble.

“We’ll sit down and understand that and I think they did tonight. Once we just come together we’ll be OK. It’s big to be 1-0 in the area, but if we don’t improve from our mistakes and start playing more of a team-atmosphere ball we will struggle.”

The Raiders (2-3) had it tied early in the second quarter, were within four 3:40 before halftime and had it within 48-41 with 6:30 left in the game. Then the Bearcats (5-1) turned up their defense, got to running off it and run away to their fifth consecutive victory after losing their season opener in Herbert’s debut as head coach.

The big run at the end started with 10 consecutive points from Shamar Spinks and Taylor Deck. Coleman Haynes’ putback basket stopped that run, but then the Bearcats went on another 10-point spree with Robert Gaines and Gary Wallace.

“If they played like that for the first three quarters we shouldn’t have to play scrappy ball in the fourth quarter,” Herbert said. “I told them at the beginning of the fourth you can’t wait until the fourth quarter to start playing our style of basketball because a team that’s as equal as you or as athletic the game may be out of reach for us because we’re behind.

“Once they put those four quarters together I think we’ll be OK. I’m trying to figure them out as we go, but I’m pleased with the fourth quarter, how they played. That’s Bearcat basketball.”

It just took them a while to get there.

Gaines led all scorers with 22 points. DeAndre McCain had 16 and Spinks had 10 for Weaver. Josh Ballew led PV with 15 points. Wyatt Ingram had 10.

FORT PAYNE – The Valley Cubs knew the kind of up-tempo shootout they were in for having beaten the Wildcats with 100 points last Friday night, but this time in the return game they came up just a little short.

The Wildcats had three 20-point scorers in the game – Kevin Hightower (27), Ty Brooks (20) and Keyshawn Hightower (25). Curiously, Kevin Hightower was held scoreless in the Wildcats’ 41-point second quarter that gave them 54-38 halftime lead, but Keyshawn Hightower had 20.
