JACKSONVILLE – Weaver sophomore Haley Homesley made her first varsity start Friday night. Lady Bearcats coach Gary Atchley promised there will be many more.
Homesley filled a vacancy in the post for the Lady Bearcats and played what Atchley called “a phenomenal game,” scoring 16 points and being the force they need inside helping Weaver overrun Pleasant Valley 71-40 in their area opener.
“She played her tail off,” Atchley said. “It was her first start – and it won’t be her last.”
Homesley had been a regular in the rotation since the start of the season, but broke into the starting lineup following the departure of Bree Edmonson. She was particularly effective in the fourth quarter, scoring eight points as the Lady Bearcats pulled away.
“It was fun,” she said. “The team needed me to come in and play, that’s what I did. I was like, ‘OK, let’s go.’”
Caleigh Cortez led the Lady Bearcats with 24 points and came within two assists of a triple double. Maleah Foster added 14 points.
“I don’t know if there’s a better guard in the county,” Atchley said of Cortez. “I’d put her up against anybody.”
Brooke Perry led PV with 16 points. Emma Hood had 11.
Atchley’s drive to beat Pleasant Valley borders on obsession. Weaver has beaten the Lady Raiders before, but not with this wide a margin and now that the teams are in the same area the game and margin take on an even greater significance.
The Bearcats jumped out 12-2 and never trailed. PV got as close as 14-10 early in the second quarter, then the Lady Bearcats went on a 13-2 run, largely by forcing turnovers and getting behind the Lady Raiders’ defense, to build a 30-20 lead at halftime. They steadily stretched the lead in the second half.
“They have been the team for the last three years; they’ve been the standard in the area,” Atchley said. “This has been a process of about four years coming. We have looked at these teams and we’ve been on the edge. For us to win this game is huge momentum for the rest of the season. Big confidence booster for our girls.”
“We’ve been working to get to this point for years,” Homesley said. “We owe a lot of people.”

JACKSONVILLE – Bethany Davis scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Rams. Davis was 10-of-12 from the field and missed only two shots the entire game. Madison Farmer had 10 points and Leianna Currie five steals for Sylvania. Kayla Stone led Jacksonville with eight points, seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Brenna Stone and Patience Carr each scored seven points.

The Lady Lions came to life and collectively withstood a barrage by Wellborn’s one-person scoring machine Itiania Weatherly. Sydnee Johnson led Faith with 17 points, while Kristin Covington had 14 and Emily Sills 12. Weatherly scored a game-high 35 points. She had all of the Lady Panthers’ points in the first quarter (11), all but two in the third (9) and all but one in the fourth (11).
