JACKSONVILLE – Cordell Hunt had had his full Jacksonville basketball team together for only two days so he was a little concerned about what he’d see when he put it on the floor.

The Golden Eagles didn’t have a lot of their stuff in, but what they had worked well enough Tuesday to produce a 49-47 victory over Alexandria.

Hunt gave his football players a week to decompress from a long football season and practiced his whole tam together for the first time Sunday. In the meantime, he supplemented the roster with his junior varsity players and they helped the Golden Eagles split in Ashville’s Thanksgiving tournament.

“We didn’t have much in, but whatever we had in they executed it pretty well,” Hunt said. “We’ve got a long way to go, but it’s a good win over Jacksonville’s rival.”

Jay Davis gave the Golden Eagles (2-1) a four-point lead late and Alexandria hit a layup with less than 10 seconds left and that’s the way it ended.

DeMarian Stewart hit several key 3-pointers in his first game of the season Carter Landers played a strong game defensively on Alexandria post Landan Williams. Stewart hit 4-of-6 3-pointers and led Jacksonville with 14 points. Donavon McCain had 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Knowing his team could win a rivalry game without a lot of prep time left Hunt with “a good feeling.”

“I know right now our kids are very athletic,” he said. “That’s great, but the thing is I’ve got to get these kids playing together. The bench was phenomenal, they stayed in the game, everybody was active.

“I knew we could play high-energy ball, but I didn’t know if we were quite ready to play basketball. I knew we had it in us.”

Jared Ponder led Alexandria (1-1) with 13 points. Williams scored eight points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots.

Donoho 77, Cleburne County 52: The Falcons’ season couldn’t have start much better as they erupted for 28 points in the first quarter. Jacob LeCroy scored 15 of his game-high 29 points in the first quarter and had 23 in the first half. Seth Ford (10), Amari Smedley (11) and Rod Elston (15) also scored in double figures for the Falcons.

The start wasn’t beyond the realm of possibility for Falcons coach Jeremy Satcher.

“I imagine it, because that’s what we preach – energy and effort – every day,” Satcher said.

Talladega 69, Benjamin Russell 46: The Tigers used a big second half for the third game in a row and remained undefeated (4-0). They’ve either been tied or trailed at halftime each of the last three games and outscored the Wildcats 44-20 in the second half – 28-8 in the fourth quarter – to win Tuesday in Alexander City.

Kobe Simmons and JQ Wilson combined for 27 points in the second half. Simmons led the Tigers 20 points and 13 rebounds, JQ Wilson had a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds, and Aaron Green had nine points and six steals.
