The Faith Christian girls basketball team won its first game of the season Friday in, really, the only way it knew how.

“Everything we do is in a dramatic fashion,” Lady Lions coach Casey Farr said after her team edged Donoho 34-33.

Logan Boyd hit the second of two free throws with 5.2 seconds left to break a 33-33 tie and the Lady Lions held their breath as Donoho missed two shots, including a short one off the rim at the buzzer.

“That was the longest five seconds of my life,” Farr said.

Adding to the drama was the fact the Lady Lions bounced back after being going scoreless in the third quarter. But, as Boyd explained, the players followed their coach’s advice and slowed things down, ran through their offense, got good shots and, as Farr said, “played with integrity.”

“These girls played with so much class and so much heart it blows my mind,” Farr said. “I am unbelievably proud of them. That’s what they did, they dug deep.”

Farr figures the Lady Lions have come this close to winning in about half of their first 10 games before Friday night. They lost to the Lady Falcons by one in their first meeting.

Boyd went to the line to give her team the lead after she was fouled rebounding Savannah Frickey’s missed layup after her steal with 10 seconds left.

She missed the first but hit the second.

“I was shaking uncontrollably; it’s crazy,” Boyd said. “It got a lot worse (after she missed the first). I was afraid it was going to be all my fault if we lost.”
