OXFORD – Zonderick Garrett may have moved to Atlanta, but there is still plenty left in the Oxford basketball team’s arsenal.

Garrett, a 6-foot-7 sophomore center, the reigning MVP of the Calhoun County Tournament, moved away during the season, but the Oxford team that rolled past White Plains 65-34 Tuesday night has an abundance of talent. It was the season-opener for both teams.

Oxford used a torrid press and rebounding and eight points from Braden Mack to open a 16-2 lead. The Wildcats fought back when Chase Helms nailed a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 16-5, then worked the ball inside and scattered four 3-pointers to eventually cut it to 36-29 early in the third quarter.

“White Plains is a tough out,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “They are so good at making you beat them. You have to go out and beat them as they do not beat themselves.”

Simeon Shadrix nailed one of his four 3-pointers to ignite a 25-2 run in the third quarter that blew the game open.

“Once we got settled down, I thought we played well,” VanMeter said. “We have the type of team that has spurts like we had tonight. Our bench really gave us a boost tonight with the play of Rylan Houck and Shadrix and Kolby Warren.”

Mountain Brook 102, Sacred Heart 59: The game was billed as a marquee matchup between two defending state champions with two of the top players in the state, but the dream matchup never happened.

The Cardinals, as expected, played without Alabama signee Diante Wood, who missed a second straight game with an ankle injury he suffered Friday night. It’s not certain how long the 6-5 senior will remain sidelined, but Cardinals coach Ralph Graves won’t do anything to jeopardize his star player’s long-term future.

It was the second year in a row the Cardinals went into a showcase against Mountain Brook without some of their key personnel.

So this time it was just the Trendon Watford show. He scored 26 points and opened his year with a thunderous dunk. The Spartans ended any remaining drama by opening the second half with a 19-0 run.

Quin Riggins led Sacred Heart with 18 points. Victor Wilson had 16 and Murdock Simmons had 14.

Oxford girls 58, White Plains 33: The Lady Jackets ran their record to 3-0 behind 20 points from Tremeria Britt.

The Lady Jackets jumped out to a quick 14-2 lead with a pressure defense that created nine first-quarter turnovers and had six different players scoring.

The pressure continued in the second quarter while the Lady Jackets began to heat up from long range with Makayla Kidd and Britt hitting 3a. Lily Ponder and Chasity Nelson had 3-pointers for White Plains in the first half, but Oxford was well in control.

Oxford had nine players score in the game. In addition to Britt, Kidd had nine points and five rebounds while Anna Bolton and Ashleigh Jackson each had six points and four boards.

Ponder led White Plains with eight points. Hanna Dyer had seven points and three rebounds. Jordan Sabree had six points.

Glencoe girls 64, Oneonta 38 – In Oneonta, Abby Vice led three Glencoe double-figure scorers with 13 points and the Lady Jackets hit eight 3-pointers as a team to win their season opener. Breia Little had 11 and A.R. Giles had 10.
