After the way it played Monday night, the White Plains girls basketball team might want to consider demanding a recount on the Calhoun County Tournament seedings.

The Lady Wildcats upset visiting Piedmont, 44-21, in their first game after being installed as the No. 12 seed in the upcoming tournament. Piedmont was the consensus fifth seed.

Carley Wood rode the excitement of her first start of the season to score six straight points to give White Plains an 8-2 lead and send it on to victory. She earned the start as coach Joi Watts opted to go with a four-guard lineup.

“It was great to come out and help contribute at the beginning of the game with my teammates,” said Wood, a starter last year working her way back from an early-season illness. “I always come out excited to play, whether I start or not, but I’m thankful for the opportunity and I just wanted to contribute as much as I can.”

After Wood got the Lady Wildcats established, Ann Katherine Dothard started working inside and scored seven of her team-high 11 as in the first quarter. Shelby Wood, Carley’s younger twin by one minute, had eight points to match her sister.

The Lady Wildcats (4-8) opened a 28-16 halftime lead, then held the Lady Bulldogs (5-8) scoreless in the third quarter and to only one field goal – with eight seconds left – in the second half.

“That’s been out downfall,” Watts said. “We’ve led several games at halftime and it’s kind of been our downfall to come out the third quarter kind of lethargic and complacent. That was one of the first things we talked about in the locker room, how we wanted to start that third.

“Defensive-wise we’ve been pushing the envelope a little bit at practice. The girls really executed tonight.”

Piedmont, meanwhile, is going through a bit of a rough patch of late with key area games on tap with Pleasant Valley tonight and Weaver Friday. The Lady Bulldogs have lost their two primary scorers, forcing Keshauna Jones, their lone available senior, off the block and into a more offensive role.

“We are very young, but I’ve got a couple of players who just got out of their game tonight who have been playing very well for us,” Piedmont coach Terrace Ridley said. “Right now I’m having girls who have to play out of position and not understanding how to transition from one spot to another. We’re most definitely a better team than what we looked like tonight.”

Oxford 63, Fort Payne 62: Ebony Kelley’s free throw in the closing seconds lifted the Lady Jackets (7-6) to victory on the road.

The game was tied when Kelley rebounded Winter Taylor’s missed shot and was fouled on the put back. She made one of her two free throws to give Oxford the lead and Lady Jackets held on as Fort Payne’s Nykeia McElrath missed a contested rushed layup off the backboard and front iron.

Kelley finished with 13 points. Taylor and Tremeria Britt led the Lady Jackets with 17 apiece. Taylor also had 10 assists and five rebounds.

Cedar Bluff 68, Donoho 30: Hanna Crosby led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points as Cedar Bluff dominated the winless Lady Falcons (0-9).

Ten players scored for the Lady Tigers. Alexia Moten had eight points and three rebounds, while senior Delilah Price had nine points and four boards.

Sophomore Constance Hodges led Donoho with 10 points and four rebounds. Alysse Lalonde had a pair of 3-pointers, while senior Anna Woodfin had six points and three rebounds. — Jason Katz
