No. 3 seed wins four of the first five holes coming out of a weather delay and defeats Nick Pollard

Jeremy McGatha won four of the first five holes coming out of a weather delay and defeated Nick Pollard 5 & 4 Wednesday in the Calhoun County Match Play Championship.

The No. 3 seed now plays No. 11 Daniel Black in the second round.

“It was nothing spectacular; neither one of us played great great,” McGatha said. “Match play is a different format. Sometimes you’ve got to do what it takes to get by.”

The players halved the first hole then were chased into the cart barn by weather for 45 minutes. When they returned to the course, McGatha won 2, 3, 4 and 6 with pars to take control of the match. Pollard cut his deficit in half with birdies at 8 and 9, but McGatha eventually closed it out with a birdie on 14.

While McGatha and Pollard waited out the weather, Adrian Geeting and Andrew Brooks gave up the ghost. They will play the final match of the first round Thursday.
