HOOVER — A five-set clash of Calhoun County volleyball powers highlighted the action during Wednesday’s play in the North Regional tournament.
Ohatchee, the reigning Class 3A runner up, rallied from behind to beat Donoho 18-25, 26-24, 17-25, 25-22, 15-9 in the second round to clinch a berth in next week’s state tournament and a match with Elkmont in Thursday’s Class 3A North Regional semifinals.
The Ohatchee-Elkmont winner will play the Westbrook Christian-Lauderdale County winner in Thursday’s regional final.

“I just can’t express how proud I am of my girls today!” Ohatchee coach Rebecca Hughes said. “They played with so much grit and heart and fought with everything they had to make sure they got themselves back to state this year.
“We knew coming into the season that we were a totally different team from last year, but we still had big expectations and goals. We didn’t want to be satisfied with just getting to regionals this year. We wanted another shot at the state title after getting a taste last year. These girls have put in the work all season long, and they deserve every bit of this. This is one of the toughest teams I’ve ever had. They put up a fight when it matters most, and I am just so proud to be their coach and I get to be a part of it.”

“Throughout the season, we had a lot of growing to do, and on many occasions, we couldn’t finish games or put the pieces together,” Donoho coach Anna Taylor said. “For the month of October, our chemistry was really working well. We had great energy and vibe going into regionals, but we knew it would be tough facing Ohatchee.
“We had a game plan, and overall, we executed, and my girls played with heart! They wanted to win so bad, and truly went down fighting. I’m so proud of them, and yes, it’s beyond disappointing to not make it to state, but I love each one so much.”
