‘Old hat’

Cole-Wigington’s first two-man round of 2025 goes for a 13-under 58, good enough to lead the Ted’s Charity Invitational by one stroke.

GADSDEN — Ty Cole and Gary Wigington didn’t play in the Calhoun County 2-man championship this year, but their experience as one of the area’s perennial contenders in two-man events showed Saturday.
Their 13-under-par 58 at Gadsden Country Club stood up as the top score in the second annual Ted’s Charity Invitational.
The two players who have combined for 11 Calhoun County player-of-the-year honors, won the Sunny King Charity Classic four times and won last year’s county two-man title lead the teams of Jackson King-Freeman Fite and Randy Reaves-Will Reaves by one stroke.
Jacob LeCroy-Tanner Wells and John Hilliard Catanzaro-William Catanzaro are two strokes back.
The lead groups played a scamble format at Gadsden Country Club on Saturday and will play low ball at Anniston Country Club during Sunday’s final round.
“This is the sixth, maybe seventh year we’ve played together in two-man stuff,” Cole said. “We kind of know what to expect. It’s kind of old hat.
“We’ve got our order we hit, order we putt, and that’s just kind of how we do it. The only change we’ll make is if I’m hitting my driver really well. I’ll hit first.”
And just like a veteran team, they finish each other’s sentences.
“And spare my back,” Wigington said.
Wigington typically lean’s on Cole’s strategy at Gadsden Country Club, where Cole plays a lot. It flips at ACC, where Wigington’s experience knows to overrule what the eyes may say.
The two short a scorching 27 on the front nine Saturday, scoring birdies on Wigington’s ball on Nos. 1, 2 and 3. Cole caught fire, going 5 under on holes 5-9.
That included an eagle on No. 9,.
“It’s one of those shots that I’ve hit it a bunch,” Cole said. “To me, it’s a stock 3-wood, and hope it lands on the bottom and don’t go on the top.
“It was a little luck to get up there at two-and-a-half feet, but it’s a shot I hit a bunch. It just ended up perfect. Putt in and go on.”
The only glitches for Cole-Wigington were missed birdie putts from 5 feet or less on Nos. 4, 10 and 18 and par on the par-5 14th hole.
“It could’ve been really low,” Cole said. “Something like this, wind and wet, I’ll take 13 (under) all day.”
