FAIRFIELD – Oxford basketball coach Joel VanMeter looked out across the floor Tuesday afternoon and saw a future so bright he had to wear shades.

He had a 10th grader go for 20 points, a ninth-grader for 10 and an eighth-grader for 12 to lead the Yellow Jackets past Blount 60-50 in the consolation bracket of the Fairfield Heritage Classic.

Jayden Lewis was the 10th grader with 20 and Jaylen Alexander was the ninth-grader with 10. The biggest surprise was eighth-grader Marcus Perry with 12.

“What coach in 6A gets the pleasure to get one eighth-grader one year (Alexander) and another the next year as good as both of them,” VanMeter said. “To be able to play at this level in those type of games at that age is a testament to them, no question.”

Perry, the son of former Anniston and Nebraska star Marcus Perry, took up for the hobbled T.J. Allen and hit three 3-pointers, two in the first quarter as the Jackets (2-3) jumped out to a 18-4 lead on a team coached by former Oxford assistant Demarcus Mosley. The Jackets hit seven 3-pointers in the game.

“He can really, really, really shoot it; he has a great feel,” VanMeter said. “But his biggest plays, honestly, we go on the road to Plainview and he has five defensive rebounds. For a kid his age, one of his best attributes is he finds the ball. He’s going to be a great player for us, just like Jaylen, just like Jayden.”

The Jackets also had a breakout game from Brock Reaves. The senior was the fourth Oxford scorer in double figures, pouring in 16 points, 14 in the first half, including all four of his 3-pointers.

“I had conversation with him before the game this morning and then I had one after the game that good things happen to you offensively when you’re locked in defensively and I think he saw that today,” VanMeter said. “He made some plays defensively, he was a much better rebounder today and all of a sudden you look up he has 16 points. He’s capable of that, but he’s a guy who hasn’t played a lot of minutes and he’s learning that as well.”

VanMeter attributed the team’s fast start to being “locked in totally” less than 18 hours after losing to Midfield in their tournament opener.

“We showed a lot of resilience as a young team,” he said. “We didn’t think we played very well, I was on them pretty good about it, but then we talked about it this morning. My message to them was we’re a very successful program and we’re going to come in and approach this the right way.

“It says a ton about them (to bounce back) because when you’re that age and you don’t have a lot of experience, you can come into that game and you can just not be focused, but that’s not what they do and that’s not what we do. We were locked in offensively and defensively, made some shots against their zone, which was a huge help and settled us down a little, but the reason we did was because we were locked in and we were focused and we had a sense of urgency.”

Spring Garden Champions champ

Spring Garden put together its third dominating performance of the tournament led by MVP Ace Austin and routed county rival Cherokee County 64-31 to win the Champions Girls Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Lady Panthers (3-0) averaged 68 points in their three tournament victories while allowing a total of 71 points.

“I really liked our defense, I thought our defense kind of set the tone for us because it allowed us to really get a lot of transition points and that’s something we haven’t had in years,” Garden coach Ricky Austin said. “From that standpoint our defense leading into transition is as good as we’ve been in that phase of our game in many many years.

“After losing five seniors … we didn’t know what to expect coming in. We had girls who never played as a group together, we had one girl who had never started a varsity game in her whole career, so we really didn’t know what to expect. Obviously pleased at this point but we’ve played three games and we know things we need to work on. It’s early but we most definitely have a pretty good starting point.”

Austin led the Lady Panthers with 22 points, seven rebounds, eight assists and four steals. In three tournament games she scored 69 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, had 22 assists and 18 steals.

“I thought she did an excellent job of not just making plays when she needed to make plays for herself, she took opportunities for her teammates also,” Austin said. “Being a playmaker for herself and her teammates was the best thing she did for us.

“It is most definitely another level than it was last year because we had so many girls who had played she set back and wasn’t such a playmaker for herself. She knew coming in expectations are more now for her to do more in both of those categories for us and I thought she did a really good job of that for these three games.”

Kayley Kirk was the Lady Panthers’ leading scorer in the championship game with 23 points. Chloe Rule had 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting and eight rebounds.

Austin was joined on the all-tournament team by Kirk, Cherokee County’s Mary Hayes Johnson, Alexandria’s Jordyn Walker, Southside’s Grace Anne Rose, Ranburne’s Briley Merrill and Ohatchee’s Jorda Crook.

OHATCHEE 69, RANBURNE 55: The Lady Indians won their first game of the season with their best game of the year after a rare 90-minute game-day practice five hours before tip-off.

Coach Bryant Ginn doesn’t usually call a game-day practice “unless it is warranted” and he wanted to get his team’s attention after a lackluster second-round loss to Jacksonville. The Lady Indians were outscored in the first quarter 18-16 and then Jorda Crook took over.

He did the same thing last year after the first round in this tournament and it resulted in a win then, too.

“I didn’t think yesterday we came out with any intensity,” Ginn said. “I thought we came out feeling like maybe we were going to win, should win, lackadaisical. I wanted to see if we could correct that this morning.

“We worked through osme of that stuff today. We didn’t turn it over near as much today and when we did it was dead ball. That makes it where you can play defense and we’re decent defensively.”

Crook had a career day, scoring 43 points and moving within three of 2,000 for her career. The Lady Indians return to action Monday at Coosa Christian. The AHSAA doesn’t list any girls player from Calhoun County on its all-time scoring list, which starts at 2,012 points.

The senior, signed to UAB for volleyball, had 14 in the second quarter and 15 in the third. She scored 90 points in three tournament games.

“You just saw Jorda being Jorda,” Ginn said.

Briley Merrill led Ranburne with 30 points.

ALEXANDRIA 46, JACKSONVILLE 37: Jordyn Walker hit six 3-pointers and scored 25 points and the Lady Cubs took control of the game by outscoring Jacksonville 14-2 in the second quarter.

It was the third straight game Walker led the Lady Cubs in scoring and her second straight 20-point game. She hit 10 3-pointers in the tournament, nine in the last two games.

“She has really played well offensively these first three games,” Lady Cubs coach Craig Kiker said of Walker. “We have to do a better job of helping her out, but she is for sure our No. 1 option scoring the ball.

“She is really quick and tough to stay in front of. What I’m really pleased with his her outside shooting has really improved. We just have to continue to improve defensively.”

Jill Cockrell hit three 3s for Alexandria and scored nine points. Ashley Grant led Jacksonville with 12 points.

Oxford wins Handley Tournament

ROANOKE – They didn’t award an MVP trophy in the Handley Girls Thanksgiving Tournament, but Oxford coach Melissa Bennett isn’t sure it wouldn’t have been a “triangle MVP” for they had.

The Lady Jackets rolled over host Handley 69-44 to win the tournament title and did it with their Big Three playing big roles.

Xai Whitfield led Oxford with 17 points. Mya McGrue scored 16 and Justice Woods had 12. With 10 points, Kaylen Kenney gave them four scorers in double figures.

“Our Big Three are killing it right now; they’re very consistent,” Bennett said. “We’re going to give a triangle MVP.”

All three of the Big Three hit a 3 in the first quarter to help Oxford open an 18-14 lead. Woods hit two more 3s in the second quarter and McGrue threw in six points as the Lady Jackets extended their lead to 38-22. Whitfield had 12 in their 25-point third quarter.

“We knew it was going to be a tough battle going in,” Bennett said. “We did really well taking what the defense gave us. We did well on the timing of our cuts and he hit some shots early, which gave us a lot of momentum.

“We needed some good mojo coming off Plainview. I thought the girls reacted really well. It was a good way to go into the Thanksgiving break.”

Rosario, Johnson step up

LINCOLN – With three of its starters battling foul trouble, White Plains needed someone to step up and take a big role. Z.J. Rosario and Carter Johnson both filled the bill, enjoying career highs in scoring, and Coleman Ray hit two big 3-pointers in the second quarter to help them take control in an eventual 65-57 win over Lincoln.

Rosario, stepping in for outside threat Luke Bussey, scored 22 points. Johnson scored 16.

“We were in constant foul trouble and Z.J., who usually plays the 2, had to come in and be the primary ballhandler,” White Plains coach Chris Randall said. “He did a great job of controlling tempo, especially when they made a run late in the third and early in the fourth.

“Everything was under control and he made really good decisions. He played like a point guard. Within the context of the offense he just did a really good job of controlling the tempo and kind of settling us down. His 20 points were nice, but the biggest thing was how he ran the offense.”

Johnson scored 10 points in the second quarter, mostly on putbacks to finish around the rim. Ray had only his points, but the two 3s he made in the second were as big as any shots in the game.

“We call it getting to the porch,” Randall said of Johnson down low. “The fact Carter was that active in the second quarter and Coleman hit those two big 3s, that was huge.”

The Wildcats wrap up their visit to the Lincoln Round Robin against Talladega County Central Wednesday at 11:30 a.m..

GLENCOE 82, WEAVER 56: The Yellow Jackets outscored Weaver 33-3 from outside the 3-point arc and hit 20 of 26 free throws and that was the difference. Five Glencoe players hit at least one 3 and every player who scored made at least one free throw.

The Jackets placed four starters and five players total in double-figure scoring. Just those five players outscored Weaver by nine.

Jeffrey Miles led Weaver with 20 points. Tristan Brown had 16 and Armane Burton had 10.

FORT PAYNE 81, FAITH CHRISTIAN 54: One day after its most prolific offensive game of the season, the Lions went cold, hitting only 17 of 55 shots from the field. 

Thomas Curley led the Lions with 22 points and eight rebounds. Yashua Arevalo had 14 points and Connor Richardson 12. But the big three shot a combined 16-for-41 and 5-for-17 from the 3-point arc. Fort Payne was 29-of-44 from the field, 7-of-15 from 3-point range.

PLAINVIEW 53, JACKSONVILLE 50: The Golden Eagles got off to a slow start, rallied in the second half and had a potential game-tying 3 in transition blocked at the buzzer.

Jacksonville trailed by 10 entering the fourth quarter, rallied but missed two potential game-tying shots in the final five seconds. The Golden Eagles missed a shot underneath with 4.5 seconds left and then, after the Bears made a free throw to extend their lead to 53-50, Caden Johnson had a 3 in transition blocked at the buzzer.

Johnson led the Golden Eagles with 17 points that included three 3-pointers. Devin Barksdale had 14 and John Broom 12.  Plainview’s Luke Smith led all scorers with 20 points.

The Thunder took a 40-35 lead into the fourth quarter, then held the Bulldogs to one field goal while outscoring them 13-5. Cam Moses was their leading scorer with 17 points. Tyler Doggrell scored six points, grabbed nine rebounds, had six steals and four assists.
