RAINBOW CITY –
The Big Hurt put a big hurtin’ on Westbrook Christian Friday night.

Faith Christian’s Colton Pahman had been in a little shooting slump, but he came up big when it counted most.

The senior hit two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws in the final 90 seconds to lift the Lions over Westbrook Christian 71-67 to complete a 4-0 week of basketball.

“He was having trouble early so we had Demonde (Bell) in there quite a bit, but we kept telling him to keep shooting the ball,” Faith coach Cory Hughes said. “He had been a little cold the last couple games, but at the end he stepped into some shots with confidence.”

His biggest shot of the game came with about a minute left. Ethan Richerzhagen saved a loose ball that found its way to Pahman. His hands and the ball were wet and he knew there was some risk associated with the shot – “I knew (Hughes) would be mad if I missed,” he said – but he let it fly and found nothing but net to tie the game. Moments later he hit both ends of a one-and-one to put the Lions in front.

“It was amazing, probably one of the biggest things I’ve ever done in sports,” Pahman said. “Ethan dove on the floor, threw it up and I shot the 3 and it went in and that kind of changed the game. Everybody got into it after that.”

Pahman finished with 13 points in 14 minutes on 4-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-4 behind the arc. Richerzhagen led the Lions (6-4) with 17 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots. Thomas Curlee also scored 13 points and had eight rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Brodie Self and Evan Sizemore led Westbrook with 18 points apiece.

The victory capped a big week for the Lions. They came into it 2-4 after almost beating Fort Payne in their final game of the Gadsden Thanksgiving Classic, then beat Winterboro, Coosa Christian, Ragland and the Warriors.

“We set a goal at the beginning of the week to go 4-0,” Pahman said. “We had faith and we came out and played like dawgs in every single game. We just didn’t want to give up and wanted that 4-0.”

They’ll take that confidence into another four-game stretch next week.

“I told them earlier they’re just going to get hotter and hotter and playing with more confidence,” Hughes said. “I don’t think people like the way we play basketball and I think they’re enjoying that.”

SPRINGVILLE 42, OXFORD 41: Gavin Gooch’s second attempt at a put back with 9.3 seconds to play gave Springville the lead and the Tigers secured the victory when Oxford couldn’t get a good shot at the buzzer.

The Jackets had plenty of time to set up the winning play. Jayden Lewis nearly had the ball stolen at the top of the key and tried to get it to Rylan Houck inside, but his pass got blocked. It came right back to him and he put up an off-balanced shot from the foul line as the horn sounded.

The Yellow Jackets hit eight 3-pointers in the game, but they scored only 15 points in the second half. Wright was their only scorer in double figures (10).

“We completely got outplayed,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “We were great defensively but refused to execute offensively. They deserve all the credit.”
