The Oxford flag football team is looking to add more credence to the adage that claims it’s tough to beat a team three times in a season when it faces Hewitt-Trussville for a third time tonight with a berth in the state championship game on the line.

The Lady Jackets dropped a pair of 14-6 games to the Huskies earlier this season and are itching for the rematch at Hewitt at 6 p.m.

“You sit and think you’re 2-0 against a team in the semifinals, but do you feel good?” Oxford coach Wes Brooks said. “Yeah, you’re a little confident, but I kind of want to take the mentality that we’re that pest that’s just not going to go away.”

The survivor gets the winner of tonight’s other semifinal between John Carroll or Smiths Station in the first flag football state title game Dec. 1 in Birmingham’s Protective Stadium.

The two games Oxford and Hewitt played previously couldn’t be more opposite except for the score. Oxford gave itself a chance in the first meeting by holding the Huskies scoreless in the second half after falling behind 14-0 and held a 6-0 halftime lead in the region finals before Hewitt scored twice in the final seven minutes.

“We’re just trying to put those two halves together,” Brooks said. “It’s weird. We’ve only scored six points against them each game and I’ll bet you 80 percent of our practice has been on defense. And everybody is like, dang, Brooks, we’ve got to figure out how to get in the end zone.

“I think our offense is decent enough that we can obviously run the football against them and hopefully hit a deep ball here or there just to keep them to where they’re not trying to get everybody within five yards of the ball.

“We’ve got a couple wrinkles here and there that we’ve added that I think would help what we already do. We’ve learned about everything we can learn in the zoo. I think it’s time to let our girls loose in the jungle and you’ve got to survive and advance. It’s all about survive and advance.”
