WEAVER – The Ohatchee girls basketball team completed a sweep of its area schedule Monday and may be finding some additional scoring threats for its postseason run.

The Lady Indians ran past Weaver 81-51 to complete their 3A Area 11 season 6-0. They got 23 points from Tori Vice and 11 from Jorda Crook, who got caught in some early foul trouble. But they also got another good game from Millie Rainwater (12 points) and Gracyn Snow had eight.

Ohatchee will be the No. 1 seed in the girls area tournament opens next week – against either Pleasant Valley or Weaver.

“I’m very thankful,” Vice said. “This is a good team and I think we have potential to go very far this year. This is the best we’ve been since I’ve been here.”

Crook scored the game’s first four points, then Snow got the Lady Indians’ next seven. When Crook picked up her second foul with just over two minutes left in the first quarter and sat the rest of the half, Vice, Rainwater and Gracie George picked up the slack. Vice had 12, Rainwater seven and George four as Ohatchee opened a 48-20 lead.

The additional threats are a plus when opponents going forward will be focusing their defensive effort on containing Vice and Crook.

“Most people have been doing that to us here lately,” Ohatchee coach Bryant Ginn said. “And Millie has made them pay. She had 21 the other night. And then they start rethinking.”

“It’s a little tough to try and stop two people, but three people makes it even harder,” Vice said. “When all five us are together it really hurts them.”

Haley Homesley led Weaver with 28 points. She hit four 3-pointers and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

SPRING GARDEN 82, CLEBURNE COUNTY 57: Spring Garden basketball coach Ricky Austin was blunt with Lexy Adkison at halftime, and the senior center responded.

Adkison scored 21 of her game-high 29 points in the second half. She also added nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

“All I really told her at halftime was you’re not playing good enough,” Austin said. “It’s the time of year where seniors have to step up. You’re not playing hard enough. You’re not playing well enough on the offensive end. You’ve got to flip that switch …  t seemed like when Lexy scored, her defensive game and rebounding game went up. I thought she stepped it up real nice.”

Adkison wasn’t the only Lady Panther who stepped things up. Eighth grade point guard Ace Austin contributed 25 points, including three 3-pointers; she also had five boards, four steals and a pair of blocked shots. Filling in for injured Neely Welsh (hamstring), eighth grade forward Maggie Jarrett posted a double-double, with 13 points and 10 boards, and four steals.

Brooklyn McDaniel led Cleburne County with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Haley Price hit five 3-pointers and had 20 points and seven rebounds. Faith Brown finished with 12 points.– Shannon Fagan, WEIS Radio
