HEFLIN –
The bug that has run through Cleburne County’s basketball teams this week sent girls coach Todd Gable to the sidelines the last two nights, so he’s needed some relief to move the pieces.

Turns out, he has a pretty good bullpen.

The Lady Tigers held off Jacksonville 42-36 Friday night in what will go down as first-year assistant coach Jordan Sides’ first varsity head coaching win.

“This was the third time we’ve played them,” Gable said. “She knew what to do as far as a game plan. I told her I know she’d have the confidence to do it.

“That’ll be her first varsity win. I’m going to let her have that win.”

He figures he has 108 of them, he can afford it.

It was only the fourth game Gable has missed in 13 years as a head coach, the last 10 with the Lady Tigers. “I don’t like to miss them,” he said.

Sides, a former Spring Garden player who works with the Cleburne County guards, made her varsity coaching debut the night before when the Lady Tigers lost a two-point area heartbreaker to Talladega. This one turned out much better.

The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter and held on. They were led by Brooklyn McDaniel’s 15 points and 12 rebounds. Kendall Houston had 10 points and five boards. Kayla Broom led Jacksonville with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

In addition to knocking Gable out, this “virus of death” as he calls it, has taken out one of his guards and is going through the boys team.

It’s his intention to watch film at school Saturday and be back on the bench Monday when the Lady Tigers (6-9) play Woodland. Later in the week they take on Sides’ old team, Spring Garden, and Gable just might give her a crack at that running that one.

“I want to see if she can get Ricky (Austin, Spring Garden’s coach) out of that chair,” he said.
