MONTGOMERY — Sacred Heart’s Diante Wood had a tough time of it Wednesday in the North’s 74-64 win over the South in the AHSAA basketball all-star game.

Wood started, but went 0-for-9 from the floor, scored four points and grabbed five rebounds in 16 minutes of action.

Huffman’s Travarus Carroll was the North’s MVP with 27 points. Homewood’s 6-11 Trey Jemison had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Lanett’s Anquavious Pollard was the South’s MVP after 23 points, five 3-pointers and eight rebounds.

Homewood’s Ajah Wayne had 22 points and eight rebounds to lead the North to a 76-67 win in the girls game.

North’s girls improved to 18-3 in the series that got underway in 1997, and the North boys hold a 48-27 edge in a series that got its start 64 years
ago.

No bucket was bigger in the boys game than Carroll’s startling round-house dunk with 57 seconds left in the third quarter that put the North ahead 48-40. The South rallied midway through the fourth period to tie the game at 53-53 but Carroll sank a 3-pointer just under the four-minute mark to push the North ahead by four 62-58.

In the girls game Wayne had 16 points in the first half, was virtually unstoppable when going inside and dead-on at the foul line as well. LeFlore’s Daisha Bradford had 15 points, four steals and five rebounds to capture MVP honors for the South.

Hazel Green’s Brooke Hampel added 12 points, Allie Cruce of Lauderdale County had 11, Karleigh Sledge of Deshler chipped in nine and Athens’ Alexis Woods had eight to round out the North offensive leaders.

Samson guard LaTascya Duff added 11 points and five rebounds for the South. Brianna Harris of Blount and Lakhylian Rankins of Faith Academy chipped in nine points each.

In a related note, Shelby Hicks, the daughter of Oxford wrestling coach Matt Hicks, will be among 10 recipients of scholarships awarded to graduating seniors at AHSAA schools who are children of AHSADCA member coaches, teachers or administrators.

The 10 students to receive the scholarships for 2016-17 will be recognized at Friday’s Coaches’ Awards Banquet.
