RAGLAND – Ben Glass realized something as he watched the Calhoun County Tournament last week.

All of the recognized scorers in the county aren’t shy when it comes to taking shots. He figured that was a pretty good philosophy to start taking.

The Ohatchee guard has never been a ball hog, but he is expected to be a scorer for the Indians. Taking what he gleaned from the county tournament, he went out Monday and scored a career high 32 points in leading the Indians to a 66-61 victory at Ragland.

“I just saw all the really good players, the guys who are going to play in college and stuff, they were taking a lot more shots,” Glass said. “They’re not like forcing shots – they’re in the flow of the game – but when they’re open they’re shooting it.

“In the Pleasant Valley (tournament game) I hit my first two 3s I think and in the second half I only shot one the whole time. That’s when I started to realize I’m going to have to shoot the ball if I want to score.”

He hit 10 field goals in the game, including four 3-pointers. In other games when a defender would rush out to him on the wing he’d fake his man off his feet and drive to the basket. He hit two treys in the first quarter Monday and that gave him the confidence to keep shooting.

He still drove to the basket, and that got him to the foul line. He was 8-for-10 from there.

Glass’ previous career high was 21, against Faith Christian earlier this season. He had that through three quarters against the Purple Devils. He scored the Indians’ first eight points of the game and had 17 in the first half.

“I knew I needed to shoot it when I was open,” he said. “In some games I would miss my first couple and that would make more hesitant to shoot the ball. This was the best my shot has felt this whole season. Every time I shot it I felt like it was going in.”

Spring Garden 72, Weaver 70 (2 OT)

SPRING GARDEN – Riley Austin scored eight points in the two overtimes and Spring Garden made 11 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter and overtimes to turn back Weaver.

Austin’s game-high 27 led four Panthers scorers in double figures. London Knight led Weaver with 22, including nine in the overtimes; he was 7-of-9 from the line in the fourth quarter and overtimes.

Weaver’s Maurice Goodman hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime and Paul Hubbard extended it to a second OT with a layup at the buzzer.

Clay Central 62, Oxford 61

LINEVILLE – Davyn Flenord hit two free throws with 11 seconds left to give the Volunteers a three-point lead in this battle of recently crowned county champions.

Joe Bullock’s 3-pointer gave the Vols a four-point lead with a minute left, but the Yellow Jackets cut it back to one with 13 seconds to play. Flenord was fouled right on the inbounds play and hit his two free throws.

Oxford missed a 3-point shot, but Caden Higgins was there to tip in the rebound right before the buzzer for the final margin.

Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said his team might have had a “little hangover” in its first game after wining the Calhoun County Tournament title. Clay Central (16-3) was coming off winning the Tri-County Tournament.

Randolph County 81, Faith Christian 60

WEDOWEE – Randolph County jumped out to a 19-12 lead and the Lions simply couldn’t catch it. Riley Camp continued his recent run of inspired play, leading Faith with 17 points. Seth Cravens scored a career-high 15 and Jordan Griswould had 11.

GIRLS GAMES

Oxford 59, Clay Central 27

LINEVILLE – Anna Bolton scored 12 points with three 3-pointers and Makayla Kidd scored seven of her 12 points in the first quarter as the Lady Jackets bolted to a big early lead. The Lady Jackets opened a 17-point halftime lead, then Bolton had two of her 3-pointers and eight points in a 21-point Oxford third quarter.

Ohatchee 42, Ragland 41

RAGLAND – Ohatchee had a six-point lead shrink to one and was looking at overtime or a loss when Ragland’s Nora Echols missed two free throws with no time on the clock. Tori Vice scored seven of her team-high 11 points in the third quarter as Ohatchee turned a one-point halftime deficit into a four-point lead after three quarters.

Faith Christian 40, Randolph County 34

WEDOWEE – Kristin Covington scored 12 of her 16 points in the first half and Sydnee Johnson had eight in the half as the Lady Lions opened a 24-11 lead.
