Oxford snaps losing streak in dramatic fashion; includes Alexandria, Jacksonville-White Plains, Ohatchee-Glencoe, Donoho, JCA, Cherokee County

By East Alabama Sports Today

PELL CITY – Oxford snapped its longest in-season losing streak in nine years Friday night in a most dramatic way.

Trey Franks scored on a 3-yard run in overtime and Laquaviuos Ford threw quarterback Jermaine Ross for a loss on the final play of the game as the Yellow Jackets beat rival Pell City 28-21 at Pete Rich Stadium.

It snapped a three-game losing streak. It was their longest losing streak within the season since losing four in a row during the 2006 season.

Adding to the drama, the Jackets held their breath as Pell City kicker Sergio Alvarez missed two 32-yard field goal attempts in the final four minutes that would have decided the game. The second one came with one second left in regulation.

“We just fought our guts out tonight,” Oxford coach Ryan Herring said. “We stepped up our play when we had to.”

Franks scored three touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets (3-5, 2-3) and rushed for 94 yards. Brody Syer completed 15 of 31 passes for 117 yards and ran for the Jackets’ other score.

Syer’s touchdown, a 19-yard run with 31 seconds left in a 35-point second quarter, gave Oxford a 21-14 halftime lead and came about through one of Herring’s gutsiest calls of the year.

The Jackets had two fourth-down conversions in the game, one in each half. The first was a 28-yard pass from Jacob Sears to Brody Syer on a fake punt. It set up the go-ahead touchdown.

“I may not be the smartest coach, but I have guts,” Herring said. “We came here to win this game and were going to do whatever we had to do to win the game.”
