Kendall Poe just got even more busy at Ohatchee High School.
The Indians’ long-time softball coach and athletics director for girls’ sports will take over the girls’ basketball program. The Calhoun County Board of education approved the move Thursday.
Poe will take over for Aaron Jackson, who coached the Indians for three seasons. Jackson stepped aside to focus on coaching the track team.
Ohatchee principal Jesse Hooks approached Poe about adding girls’ basketball to her slate.
“Mr. Hooks called, and we talked about the opportunity,” Poe said. “It just kind of fell in my lap, honestly, but just getting everybody on the same page, and we like to run the girls’ side of things all together as one unit, me and Coach (Rebecca Hughes), it just made sense for me to take it over.”
Hughes is the head volleyball coach and an assistant in softball.
Poe has coached Ohatchee’s softball team for 11 seasons. The Indians’ went 33-13 this spring, winning an area title and reaching the final Class ?A state-qualifying game at the East Regional.
She also coached junior-high basketball in her first three years at Ohatchee and again in 2024-25, winning a Calhoun County title in 2025. She also leads weight-lifting classes for Ohatchee’s female athletes.
Ohatchee’s girls’ basketball team will return a veteran group next season, with several of the basketball players also playing softball.
“I think all five of the starters we’re looking at right now also play softball,” Poe said.
Poe said cousin and former Ragland softball and basketball standout Emily Church will be part of her softball staff.
“I’m super pumped,” Poe said. “I love Ohatchee. I love everything about the girls’ athletics program. I know the girls and love them a lot. I love spending time with them.”
