Spring roundup

White Plains softball wins two in Gulf Shores Classic, and Wildcats’ baseball team wins a marathon game at Choccolocco Park. (Will be updated with later games)

Going around the horn with Monday’s area high school baseball and softball action.

Softball

WHITE PLAINS: The Wildcats (15-5) opened play in the Gulf Coast Classic by beating New Hope 12-2 and Waverly (Tenn.) Central 4-0.

Carli Fritts went 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, two RBIs and a run against New Hope. She also pitched all three innings, allowing two hits, two walks and one earned run with four strikeouts.

Carleigh-Anne Green went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.

Jaylie Holt went 1-for-2 with a triple, two runs and an RBI, and Karli Otwell went 1-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI.

R Smith and Anna O’Dell each had a single, a run and an RBI.

Kinsleigh Gross pitched a three-hit shutout against Waverly Central, allowing three walks with four strikeouts in five innings.

Fritts went 3-for-3 with three doubles and a run, and Piper Thompson went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs. Green went 2-for-3, and Sara Kate Adams had a single, a run and an RBI.

ALEXANDRIA: The Valley Cubs (9-6) opened play in the Gulf Coast Classic by falling to Brookwood 4-3 and Battleground (Tenn.) 5-2.

Charlee Parris went 2-for-2 with two runs against Brookwood, and Boo Boo Bright had a single and a run. Marlee Edge pitched two perfect innings of relief.

Reece Carr had a double and an RBI against Battleground, and B Elston singled and drove in a run. Carr pitched three innings, allowing four hits, two walks and two earned runs with four strikeouts.

WELLBORN: The Panthers (2-17) fell to Demopolis 3-2 and Fairhope 15-0 in the Gulf Shores Classic.

Cassidy Gray allowed no hits and no earned runs in 3 2/3 innings against Demopolis. She had three strikeouts and five walks.

She also had one of Wellborn’s three hits, a single. Zierra Foster and Raelyn Webb each had a single, and Webb scored a run.

Fairhope’s Addison Russell pitched a perfect game with nine strikeouts in three innings against Wellborn. 

Baseball

ALEXANDRIA 14, NEW HOPE 2: Alexandria’s Cam Johnson went 4-for-5 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs, and Jeremiah Heathcock went 4-for-4 with a triple, a double, three RBIs and a run.

Sawyer Coggins went 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI, and the Valley Cubs got lots of pinch-hit production: Weston Haynes 1-for-2, two RBIs, Knox Faulker 1-for-1, two runs and one RBI; and Bentley Pressley 1-for-3, two runs and one RBI.

Brodie Barber got the win, allowing four hits, no walks and two earned runs with 10 strikeouts in five innings. Emmitt Waldrep pitched two innings of relief, allowing two hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

WHITE PLAINS 14, HALE COUNTY 12: Playing at Choccolocco Park, White Plains improved to 5–5.

Elijah Turner went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and a run, and Keaton Lindsey went 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI. Caden Foster went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.

Jacob Stamm added a single, two RBIs and a run, and Logan Laube singled with a run and an RBI.

WALTON 1-8, HOPE CHRISTIAN 0-1: Playing Destin, Hope (9-4) lost two to Walton. 

Caden Marturello had a double, one of three Hope hits in the first game, and three Saints pitchers held Walton to two hits. Liam Avery pitched a hitless and scoreless four innings, with four strikeouts and five walks. Kingston Eagle and Carson Campell each pitched an inning of relief.

Marturello had a single and an RBI in the second game.
