THORSBY — Mo Winston’s eye-popping rushing statistics have been a through line for Randolph County’s football season, but he outdid himself in the Tigers’ playoff opener Thursday.
Winston rushed for 449 yards and seven touchdowns, and Randolph County went on the road to beat Thorsby 51-32.
The Tigers (9-2) will play host to Friday’s winner between Bayside Academy and Houston Academy in the second round.
Winston’s touchdown runs covered 36, 38, 91, 42, 54, 60 and 21 yards. His 449 rushing yards mark the 10th highest single-game total in AHSAA history, according to records available on AHSAA.com.
He also scored four two-point conversions and intercepted a pass.
Winston has rushed for 2,593 yards and 29 touchdowns this season. He has 42 total touchdowns.
ALEXANDRIA 47, FAYETTE COUNTY 20: J.J. Beason rushed for 303 yards and four touchdowns, and Alexandria improved to 10-1 headed into next week’s second-round matchup at Plainview.
Beason’s touchdown runs covered 20, 50, seven and eight yards.
Cole Wheeler completed 14 of 15 passes for 141 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown pass to M.J. Morris.
Ryan Brown added an 8-yard touchdown run, and Johnathan Santos added a 3-yard touchdown.
PIEDMONT 59, PHIL CAMPBELL 19: Cole Austin completed eight of 11 passes for 140 yards and three touchdowns, and Piedmont (11-0) picked up the program’s 600th victory while advancing to play host to Fyffe in the second round.
The Bulldogs are 600-420-30 all-time with five state championships.
Piedmont led 59-6 at halftime, and the teams played the second half on a 10-minute running clock.
Rollie Pinto caught five passes for 64 yards and two touchdowns, and Ethan Tidwell’s two catches for 37 yards included a 17-yard touchdown pass from Austin.
Nick Mixson rushed for 79 yards, including touchdown runs of seven 18 and 35 yards. Jaxon Howard’s 33 rushing yards included touchdown runs of 12 and four yards.
HANDLEY 40, BIBB COUNTY 7: Makavian Allen rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns, and Cordan Patterson rushed for 127 yards and two touchdowns as Handley (10-1) advanced to play host to Friday’s winner between Jackson and Ashford.
Deundrea Gray added 66 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Ladarious Tucker added 40 yards rushing and a touchdown.
