‘Revenge’

After falling in a playoff in last year’s rain-shortened Calhoun County Team Championship, LeCroy-Wells hope to feel sunshine on their faces this year.

SILVER LAKES — Jacob LeCroy and Tanner Wells hope to finish in this year’s Calhoun County Team Championship what they started in last year’s rain-shortened version.

The tandem shot 13-under 59 Saturday at Silver Lakes to lead Ty Cole-Luke Armstrong and Ott-Dalton Chandler by three strokes.

Defending champion’s Layton Bussey-Cam Hurst are third, four shots back.

The best news for LeCroy-Wells? No rain is forecast for Sunday’s final round.

“Me and Tanner have been talking about this since January, excited for it, coming out here and hopefully getting our revenge,” LeCroy said.

LeCroy-Wells finished last year’s first round tied with Bussey-Hurst. Forecasts of copious rain for Sunday prompted organizers to call it after one round.

LeCroy-Wells would’ve won a scorecard playoff but agreed to play it out.

“We decided to go back out and play just because it was Layton, and we’re great buddies with Layton,” LeCroy said. “If we had lost the scorecard playoff, we would’ve expected the same courtesy.”

Bussey-Hurst won the playoff hole and the tournament.

“We lost last year, and I’m OK with it, but we’re coming out here and, hopefully, getting our revenge,” LeCroy said.

LeCroy’s 100-foot putt for eagle on the final hole Saturday helped to swell his and Wells’ lead.

“It was awesome,” LeCroy said. “It was one of those where I hadn’t putted great all day.

“To see that go in? It was like, wow.”

The putt broke right after the first 15 putt, straightened, eased left, topped a hill.

“It slingshot left,” LeCroy said. “We were just trying to get birdie and get out of there.”
