ANNISTON — Some of the best two-man golf tandems in Calhoun County recently have had one man in common … Layton Bussey.
Bussey and Tanner Wells shot a 14-under-par 56 in Sunday’s final round to overcome three first-round co-leaders to win the 17th annual Buddy Moore Charity Golf Tournament at Anniston Municipal Golf Course.
Bussey-Wells went 61-56—117 to finish 23 under for the tournament and score a two stroke victory over Matt Miller-Derek Sewell.
Bussey-Wells started Sunday’s final round one stroke behind co-leaders Robin & Caden Wood, Ott & Carson Chandler and Andrew Brooks-Brennan Clay. Bussey-Wells shot Sunday’s second-best round, one stroke worse than a 55 shot by Mark McCaig and Sawyer Edwards.
Miller-Sewell shot a 57 to round out Sunday’s 50-something rounds.
Bussey-Wells finished third in the 2024 Buddy Moore after struggling on Sunday. Bussey teamed with Cam Hurst in a last-minute pairing to win the weather-shortened Calhoun County Two-Man Championship in April, and Bussey teamed with former Jax State teammate Jesus Montenegro to win the 2023 Sunny King Charity Classic.
Wells, who finished fifth in the 2025 Calhoun County Golf Tour points standings and got his first Tour victory at Cider Ridge, brought his own mojo the pairing with Bussey.
“He carried me,” Wells said about their round Sunday.
“That’s not true,” Bussey said. “He played great. He played great.”
All banter aside, both players called it a brother-in-law effort. They played well both days but hit more putts Sunday.
“Making putts out here is not the easiest thing,” Bussey said. “If you hit it close and hit it in the right spot, you’re going to score, and we really did that today.
“Tanner hit some unbelievable drives, just perfect, put us in the right position. I drove 8 and 17 twice, so we had eagle putts and two-putt birdies on that hole both times.”
Ironically, Bussey and Wells will have different partners Friday, when the Sunny King Charity Classic starts. Bussey will team with former Jax State assistant coach Jacob Joiner, and Wells will team with Chandler Wilborn.
“Now, we’re really looking dumb,” Bussey joked after he and Wells scorched “The Hill” on Sunday.
“I tried to get him to play with me,” Wells said.
Bussey had asked Joiner, and Joiner became available after falling one stroke short of qualifying for the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
“I had already asked a friend, and I told him (Wells), ‘If he (Joiner) makes the Mid-Am, then we’re in,” Bussey said.
Wells said he and Bussey enjoy playing together.
“We have fun every time,” Wells said. “I really could care less if we win or not, but it’s fun when you are up there.”
“I’d like to play more team stuff with Tanner,” Bussey said. “We play really good together. He makes my drive the short, safe one.”
