OXFORD — Tanner Wells’ first congratulations Sunday came in the form of a fist bump from Brennan Clay, his nearest competitor in what became a competitive Oxford City Championship.

Then came a greeting from Chad Calvert, Wells’ nearest competition in Saturday’s first round.

Wells made his way to the clubhouse to report his scorecard and collect handshakes, bro hugs and congratulations from those who remained from a field of nearly 150 golfers.

It’s hard to match that king-for-a-day feeling that comes with winning a golf tournament. Wells felt it twice in a seven-day span.

Sunday, he felt it for the first time on the Calhoun County Golf Tour.

An adventurous final round, capped by an especially adventurous final three holes, ended with Wells as the wire-to-wire winner over days at Cider Ridge. He shot a 6-under-par 138 (65-73) and edged Clay by one stroke.

Ty Cole emerged from a tie for third place, four strokes off of Wells’ winning pace.

It didn’t matter to Wells how it ended, just that it ended with him on top.
