CARROLLTON, Ga. — So much for the notion that anything Georgia is better than anything Alabama in high school football.
Mason Mims completed 28 of 35 passes for 442 yards and three touchdowns, and Oxford came back from a 10-point deficit twice to beat Central-Carrollton 56-46 on Friday.
Caleb Wynn rushed 19 times for 139 yards and four touchdowns.
Nick Richardson caught 13 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns, and Jalin Taylor caught 11 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown. Taylor also scored on a 60-yard punt return.
Oxford trailed 24-14 at halftime and 31-21 at 8:02 in the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets took a 35-31 lead on a Mims-Richardson hookup at 11:36 of the fourth quarter and 42-31 on Taylor’s punt return at 10:13.
A Wynn touchdown run made it 49-39 at 6:31 after Central closed the gap.
“We fell behind early, but our kids showed unbelievable guts to stay with it and complete the comeback,” Oxford coach Sam Adams said.
JACKSONVILLE 43, ETOWAH 33: Jacksonville mounted 484 rushing yards with three 100-yard rushers and came back from a 14-3 deficit.
Zay English rushed for 178 yards and four touchdowns, Trent Jackson 125 yards and two scores and Tylen Ellis 161 yards.
English’s night included touchdown runs of five, 30, four and 21 yards. Jackson ran for scores of 25 and two yards.
PLEASANT VALLEY 28, WEST END 12: Jaden Sparks ran for two touchdowns, and Braxton Salter passed for two as Pleasant Valley rolled up a 28-0 lead en route to victory.
Salster passed for touchdowns of 25 yards to Noah Johnson and 30 yards to Hunter Sparks. Sparks also caught a conversion pass.
Brayden Pappa led the Raiders’ defense with 10 tackles.
“Very proud of how physical we played as a team,” Pleasant Valley coach Jonathan Nix said. “Busted a coverage late, but very proud of offense and defense. Great effort on both sides with finishing.”
MT. ZION (Ga.) 43, RANBURNE 36: Ranburne’s Curtis Daniel rushed 18 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns, and Creed Young rushed 12 times for 102 yards and a score.
Aiden Whitman added 85 yards and a touchdown on three rushes, and Brody Morgan rushed nine times for 61 yards and a touchdown.
Daniel and Kalon Smith led the defense with seven tackles apiece.
JACKSONVILLE CHRISTIAN 67, TUSCALOOSA CHRISTIAN 38: Noah Lee completed 23 of 28 passes for 294 yards and five touchdowns, with two receivers having big nights as the Thunder rebounded from a season-opening loss in a big way.
Jesse Gannaway caught eight passes for 161 yards and three touchdowns, and Bryson Dowdey caught 12 passes for 120 yards and two scores.
Caleb Stallings rushed nine times for 103 yards and a touchdown, and Nick Brodeur intercepted two passes and rushed for 34 yards and a touchdown.
