Alexandria, Pleasant Valley get to third round of Gulf Coast Classic, sent home by shutouts

GULF SHORES –
Pleasant Valley and Alexandria both won a pair of intense games in the elimination bracket of the Gulf Coast Classic III Wednesday before being sent home in the quarterfinals by shutouts.
 
PV was eliminated by Holtville 15-0. The Lady Raiders gave up two home runs and were held to singles by Lindsey Pritchett, Ava Boozer and Savannah Williams by the team coach David Bryant said was the best his team has faced this year.
 
Alexandria was eliminated by Prattville 4-0. The Lady Cubs gave up three runs in the first inning and were held to singles by Lanie Dreyer, Jordan Beason and Abby Bowers.
 
Before that, however, Lady Raiders knocked off Charles Henderson (6-4) and Smith Station (2-1), and the Lady Cubs bounced Slocomb (4-1) and West Point (5-2).
 
In the Smith Station game that sent PV to the quarterfinals, Leah Patterson pitched a six-inning no-hitter and gave up an unearned run in the sixth. By then, the Lady Raiders had a 2-0 lead on a pair of RBI doubles by Williams in first and third innings.
 
Pritchett and Boozer each had two hits in the game as well.
 
Williams turned back Smith Station threats in the second and fourth innings.
 
The Lady Raiders erupted for six runs in the second inning against Charles Henderson.  Bailey Harris hit a solo homer, Boozer had a two-run double and Williams, Krystal Brown and Julianna Ballew also had RBIs in the inning.
 
Alexandria broke a 1-1 tie against Slocomb with three runs in the fifth. Daisy Bowie, Mattie Wade and Maggie Phillips drove in the runs. Phillips allowed only three hits and struck out nine in five innings for the win.
 
The Lady Cubs broke a 2-2 tie with West Point with three runs in the sixth. Jordan Beason, Logan Irwin and Bowie – the 7-8-9 hitters in their order – drove in the runs.
 
Both teams now await their placement in Sunday’s Calhoun County Tournament seeding meeting.
