White Plains wins area thriller

CENTRE – White Plains rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win two tight sets and score a 3-2 area victory over Cherokee County. The Lady Wildcats won the first set 25-16, dropped the next two 26-24 and 25-17, forced a fifth set 27-25 and won it 19-17.

“It was a great back and forth match,” first-year WP coach Ben Carroll said.

Gracie Morgan had 15 kills for the Lady Wildcats (10-11). Jocelyn Harris had seven kills, freshman Callyn Martin had 48 assists and Natalie Pinto had 21 assists in limited action after being released earlier in the day after suffering a high ankle sprain in Week Two.

“When Natalie went down, she was not just our setter but our team captain,” Carroll said. “We kind of struggled after that trying to find our identity as a team. We struggled with being able to finish a match and had kind of given up on themselves when matches got tough.

“We had a tough one Tuesday against Faith. After that match I challenged them to just find the want-to, the drive and competitive desire to win. After we down 2-1 (tonight) I told them I don’t care if we win or lose this match, I want you to give me everything you have got to give on the court, make it up in your mind you’re not going to let a single ball land on the court and they stepped up to the challenge.

“To see them fight and work together like that and pick each other up it showed me they are finally starting to come together as a team, finally turning that corner.”
