GLENCOE — When you’ve been together as long as some of the Alexandria players have been playing it doesn’t always take a time out to change when things aren’t going right.

Take what happened in the Valley Cubs’ stunning 56-44 victory over previously unbeaten Class 4A No. 1 Oneonta Thursday in the Glencoe Holiday Shootout, for example.

The Cubs were down 20-4 early in the second quarter, then made the switch that completely changed the game — all without coach Jason Johnson calling a TO-bay-bee to move the pieces around.

What they did was instinctively move from a man-to-man defense that didn’t have much energy to a 1-3-1 zone trap they use for just such an occasion. It couldn’t have worked better.

The Valley Cubs continually turned Oneonta over, converted the miscues into baskets, eventually got the lead and went on to hand the top-ranked Redskins their first loss of the season. That would be outscoring them 52-24 over the final 23 minutes of the game.

“The better-coached basketball team won,” said first-year Oneonta coach Brandon Crews, the former White Plains assistant who has the Redskins on the verge of unparalleled success. “In the second quarter they switched to their 1-3-1 trapping defense and we didn’t handle their pressure well, and by well (he means) we were terrible at it.”

But the most intriguing aspect of the turnaround was nobody had to say anything to make it happen. It was like the simple nod Rick gives to the band from the balcony in Casablanca to play the Marseillaise and it changes the whole tone of the character.

“Alexandria has done that for years, going all the way back to coach (Larry) Ginn,” Crews said. “Coach Johnson made a call from the sideline and those guys have all grown up in the program and done the same thing since they were in the seventh grade. He can make one call, say one word, and everybody knows what to do.”

Not long after making the switch the Cubs (9-3) had gotten their deficit down to two with 2:44 left in the first half. The Redskins (15-1) then hit a pair of 3-pointers and led by five at the half.

But Alexandria continued to disrupt the Redskins in the second half and eventually tied the game at 28 on two free throws by Landon Williams with 6:33 left in the third quarter. They took their first lead 29-28 on a free throw by Joe Tucker a few seconds later, then Dalton Dodd buried two 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions and the Valley Cubs never trailed again. They had a 13-point lead after three quarters.

“I think it caught them off guard that they didn’t have any kind of stoppage in the game for them to drop any kind of offense against a 1-3-1,” Cubs guard Jake Weathington said. “I think that hurt them.”

As usual, it was Dodd who led the way. Once the Cubs back in rhythm in their offense, the UAH signee scored 20 of his game-high 22 points in the second and third quarters, with 14 coming in the third. He was the only Alexandria player to score in double figures.

And the way Weathington kept them under control shouldn’t be overlooked, either.

“I wouldn’t say we were worried, we just didn’t play real well in the first (quarter),” Dodd said. “Once they got on that real hot streak it was hard to stop then, but then coach Johnson got onto us and it lit a fire under us.”

While Thursday’s loss was disappointing to Oneonta, it shouldn’t end all the strides it has made since Crews came aboard. The program had had five straight losing seasons, but the new coach introduced a little discipline and a lot of White Plains-style defense and the Redskins have already won as many games as they did all last season.

They have been No. 1 in their classification since the rankings first came out.

“The streak was nice,” he said. “It was nice for the boys to get attention, but the things we struggled with today are the things we struggled with during the streak. Any time teams have trapped us in the past, we’ve struggled with it. We were just playing a team today that was a lot better and were able to capitalize off our mistakes.”

Cleburne County Holiday Hoops Classic
Saks 71, Weaver 66:
The Wildcats played most of the first half without foul-plagued DeVaughan Beason, but their leading scorer was there down the stretch when his team needed him most.

Beason scored 16 of his team-high 20 points in the second half, including four free throws in the fourth quarter as the Wildcats rallied from six down with less than two minutes to play to earn a spot in the championship game. In fact, Saks hit its last six free throw attempts in the quarter to keep the Bearcats at bay once it took the lead.

Darien Briskey added 17 points for Saks. London Knight and Robert Gaines both scored 20 points for Weaver.

The Wildcats will play Randolph County for the boys championship Friday at 7:30 p.m. Host Cleburne County will play Piedmont for the girls crown at 6.

Tournament of Champions Classic
Grayson 60, Sacred Heart 46: The Cardinals ran into too much of a good thing, especially in the second half. Even though no Grayson player scored in double figures, the Rams got scoring from 11 of 12 players and outscored the Cardinals 44-22 in the paint. It was a 25-23 game at halftime, but the Rams shot 59 percent from the field in the second half while Sacred Heart was only 9-of-28. Sacred Heart will play the Pebblebrook (Ga.)-Lower Richland (S.C.) loser Friday at 1 p.m.

AL.com Classic
Austin 64, Oxford 56:
The Yellow Jackets appeared on the way to a second straight trip to the consolation finals after a big first quarter, but struggled in the second half. Austin outscored the Jackets 23-8 in the third quarter to erase a 36-28 halftime deficit and carried on to the victory. Austin shot 63 percent from the field in the second half to only 29 percent by the Jackets. Oxford had four scorers in double figures, with Rok Taylor scoring a team-high 13 points and Markise Davis posting a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds)

Albertville Civitans Christmas Classic
American Christian 61, Talladega 56 (OT):
The Tigers tied the game on a pair of Ashton Duncan free throws with 18 seconds left and sent it to overtime with a defensive stop with two seconds to go, but scored only two free throws in the extra period.

Duncan led the Tigers with 20 points and nine assists. Decorvious Wilson continued to show he can play on the varsity level by knocking down 10 points. J.Q. Wilson and Kobe Simmons had eight each. The Tigers will play Handley today at 6 p.m. in the third-place game.

GIRLS GAMES

Glencoe Holiday Shootout
Oxford 45, Boaz 42:
It wasn’t the most artistic of victories, but the Lady Jackets hit six of the nine free throws they made in the game in the final 50 seconds to secure the victory. Makayla Kidd hit three of them and Trem Britt hit two. Anna Bolton hit the other. The Lady Pirates made it 41-39 game on a 3-pointer with 40.7 seconds left, then Oxford scored the next four points from the line to stretch it out.

“That’s what you expect from your seniors and they stepped up and they did it,” Oxford coach Melissa Bennett said. “Sometimes you’re going to have those ugly ones and sometimes stuff doesn’t want to go for you and you’ve got to find a way and there late we didn’t panic.

“We had been working on situational stuff like that in practice and I think our seniors stepped up big there late.”

Glencoe 75, Wellborn 38: The Lady Jackets used balanced scoring and a defensive approach designed to make Wellborn work for every inch of floor it gained to move a step closer to wining their own tournament. Glencoe had two players score in double figures – Lauren Cole (10) and Cami Zahorscak (11) – but more importantly had eight players score at least seven points.

“We talked at the beginning that we’re a pretty good team, it’s time to bust through the ceiling and be a really good team,” Glencoe coach Daniel Cook said. “It starts by winning a championship.”

The Lady Jackets (8-5) will have to get through Oxford and the Fort Payne-Oneonta winner to win their own tournament.

Asbury Christmas Classic
Pleasant Valley 67, West End 30:
Mac Parris spotted up for nine 3-pointers against a zone defense and scored 27 points — both career highs — and when she wasn’t hitting from the outside Emma Hood was attacking the basket and had 21.

Parris hit four of her treys in the second quarter, six in the first half, as the Lady Raiders roared to a 39-18 halftime lead. The most she had ever hit in a high school game before was six, although she nailed seven in a fall league game at Champions Sports Academy earlier this year.

“I felt on fire,” she said.

The Lady Raiders play Brindlee Mountain Friday at 3 p.m. in the consolation final.
