CHELSEA –
The Oxford girls basketball team hit their free throws when it counted Tuesday and keyed a big fourth-quarter comeback that produced a 68-62 victory over Chelsea.

Tremeria Britt scored 16 of her 23 points in the fourth quarter and was one of three senior guards who went a combined 12-for-14 from the line in the period.

The Lady Jackets (7-7) were only 3-of-13 from the line in the first half and 7-for-20 through three quarters before finding their stroke in the crucial fourth quarter.

Britt was 4-for-4 in the quarter, Makayla Kidd was 5-for-6 and Anna Bolton was 3-for-4. Kidd finished with 11 points and Bolton had 13.

“Huge comeback,” Oxford coach Melissa Bennett said. “We stepped it up in the fourth. Energy was the key. No one wanted to let their team down so everyone was focused, bought in late and did their job.”

Wellborn 68, Donoho 44: Vanessa Carter didn’t wait until the fourth quarter this time to take over. The Wellborn star, who dominated in the final four minutes of a suddenly close game to spark the Lady Panthers’ win over Ohatchee the day before, was strong in this one from the start. She scored 12 of her 33 points in the second quarter when the Lady Panthers pulled away from a tie game and opened a 15-point halftime lead.

BOYS GAMES

Anniston 56, Cane Ridge (Tenn.) 53: James Haynes hit three of four free throws in the final 30 seconds to and Anniston withstood a hard fourth-quarter charge to win in the consolation bracket of Huntsville Hoops Invitational. The Bulldogs led 44-30 after three quarters, but Cane Ridge used a tight full-court man defense to draw even with 30 seconds left. Haynes was fouled twice and calmly sealed the deal. The Bulldogs, who lost to Grissom in the opening round, play Arab Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

Talladega 117, Cleburne County 41: The Tigers enjoyed their best offensive night of the season, scoring 70 points in the first half, more than 30 points in each of the first three quarters, hitting 12 of 23 3-pointers and placing six scorers in double figures.

Chaztin Tanner led the Tigers with five 3-pointers and 25 points. Kobe Simmons had 19 points and seven rebounds; Fred Dickerson had 18 points, seven steals and eight assists; Ashton Duncan had 17 points, eight assists and seven rebounds; and Jay Patterson pulled down 15 boards. The sixth-ranked Tigers visit No. 2 Sylacauga Wednesday night.

Clay Central 61, Opelika 55: The Volunteers got out to a 23-8 lead and will play Valley for the championship of the Handley Christmas Tournament Wednesday. Joc Bullock dropped five 3-pointers in the game and finished with 21 points. The Vols (4-2) had been struggling at the free throw line, but were a torrid 11-of-14 in the fourth quarter to maintain control of the lead.
