JACKSONVILLE – Pleasant Valley won only one game last season and it came in the third to last game of the year. It didn’t have to wait that long to get its first one this year.

The Raiders defeated Gaston in their home opener, the second game of the year, 68-64 Thursday, but it wasn’t easy, although it started out that way. They lost a 20-point lead, but still pulled it out in the end.

“We won it, that’s something positive we can build on, but it wasn’t very pretty,” PV coach Ryan Chambless said. “We played a pretty good first half and then about imploded, really.

“I told them that’s not the way we wanted to win. I’ve always said if you’re up by 20 at halftime you’re trying to win by 30 or more, not let the team back in. We want to keep the hammer down. We relaxed and they came on.”

The Raiders (1-1), who lost a two-point game in their opener at Donoho Tuesday, roared to a 42-21 halftime lead by doing a lot of things well. They looked quite different coming out for the third quarter, Gaston took advantage of it and actually grabbed the lead briefly in the fourth quarter.

But the Bulldogs expended so much energy overcoming their deficit they fouled out three players and finished with the game with four on the floor.

Caden Turner led the Raiders with 26 points and made eight of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter; he was 5-for-5 from the line in the fourth quarter the other night. Ethan Johnson scored six of his 10 in the fourth quarter. Dakota Herron scored 10 of his 13 points in the first half.

Sawyer Bryson sparked Gaston’s comeback with 18 of his 24 points in the second half, 16 in the fourth quarter.

“I feel like we fixed some stuff from the other night, but went bonkers on some others,” Chambless said. “We were playing really good defensively in the first half and we were running our offensive sets pretty good, but the second half they came out and attacked pretty hard and we were back on our heels.”

Plainview 76, Oxford 69: Despite early foul trouble Oxford played its hosts even for a half and held a 48-42 lead through three quarters, but the Bears erupted for 34 points in the fourth quarter to turn the Yellow Jackets away.

Plainview hit 12 3-pointers in the game, none more impactful than its three straight in a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter.

“Two of the three they banked in, and when they did that, that just kind of took the wind out of our sails and we weren’t tough enough to overcome it,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “It was 9-0. If it’s a 9-5 run you feel a lot different about yourself, but it was 9-0. They out-toughed us in the fourth quarter, bottom line.”

Koby Tinker hit two 3-pointers and scored 15 of his game-high 26 points in the fourth quarter to spark the Bears’ comeback. Haden White (13 points) also hit a pair of 3s in the quarter.

Markise Davis and Braden Mack led the Yellow Jackets with 22 and 20 points, respectively. Kendrick Foster scored 11 points and drew praise for his defensive play. The foul trouble that plagued the Jackets early in the game took its toll on Eugene Leonard’s effectiveness. The Jackets’ point guard was held scoreless and his best opportunity to score came on a missed free throw in the fourth quarter.

“We’ve just got to do a better job of being tougher in the fourth quarter against a good team,” VanMeter said. “We were throwing them back and forth (Oxford had eight 3s in the game), but when they made those three consecutive 3s we wilted for a couple minutes.

“But overall I’m encouraged. They return seven or eight of their top 10 guys from a state finalist and the year before they lost in the regional final. All those kids had played in those type of games for two straight years; we played two guys a ton of minutes who were playing JV last year. There were some plays tonight that were high-level basketball. For us to do what we did considering Eugene didn’t score a basket and all the other stuff I’m pretty encouraged.”

GIRLS GAMES
JACKSONVILLE –
Pleasant Valley held Gaston scoreless in the first quarter and Emma Hood scored 20 point leading the Lady Raiders to a 57-22 girls basketball victory over Gaston Thursday night.

PV (2-0) jumped out to a 16-0 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 38-9 at the half. Hood, who went for 18 in the Lady Raiders’ season-opening victory at Donoho Tuesday, had 10 points in each half. Karmyn Sparks scored eight of her 10 in the first half.

Plainview 67, Oxford 42: The home team pulled away from a close game with a turnover-fueled 26-9 run in the second quarter and handed the Lady Jackets (3-1) their first loss of the season. It was a 13-11 game before the run. Tremeria Britt led Oxford with 16 points.
