Boys roundup: Wildcats bury 17 3-pointers on night ‘where everything goes your way,’ Sacred Heart tops another 7A foe; more games and box scores

The shooters from Saks had the kind of night Friday that comes around maybe once in a career.

The Wildcats hit and hit and hit and didn’t hardly miss. They made 17 3-pointers in a 93-50 rout of Wellborn.

“It was contagious,” Saks coach Jonathan Miller said. “We jumped out to a big lead and shot the ball with confidence all night.

“We were 10 of 15 in the first half. I figured we would cool off in the second half, but we didn’t. It was just one of those nights where everything goes your way.”

Five different Wildcats hit at least one 3-pointer. Alfonza Ward hit five, DeVaunghn Beason and Jamal Stone had four each, LaDerrick Bell hit three and Brent Clark, who scored the first points of his career earlier in the week, had one.

The 17 treys were four shy of the state record, listed as 21 by Plainview in a 2016-17 game against DAR. With Wellborn hitting eight, the teams were one shy of tying the second-most 3s in a game by both teams; the record is 29.

The Wildcats hit 10 3-pointers in the first half en route to a 50-18 lead; at one stretch they made five straight baskets from 3-point range. They threw in four more in the third quarter.

Sacred Heart 66, Gadsden City 59

GADSDEN — Gadsden City was down 24 points with 3:33 left in the third quarter and it looked like Sacred Heart had the game in the bag. Then the Titans kicked it in gear.

Deonte Jones started sinking shots from wherever he launched them to help get Gadsden City to within five points, but the top-ranked Cardinals held on to take down another bigger opponent and sweep the season series with the Titans.

Gadsden City (14-13) went on a 27-8 run to trim its deficit to 60-55 with 2:41 left in the game. The Cardinals (21-8) were able to sink six free throws down the stretch to seal the victory, though.

“We finally woke up and started playing,” Gadsden City coach Reginald Huff said. “We didn’t do anything else but challenge them to play. We normally play hard but we came out the gates really sluggish for some reason.”

Jones scored 17 of his 26 points during the Titans’ run. Once he heated up, there weren’t many shots that did fall for the Gadsden City senior. “We should have gotten him the ball a few more times when he was open,” Huff said.

The Titans were able to hang around for much of the first half, but never held the lead at any point of the game.

Kevion Nolan then scored 10 points to help push Sacred Heart’s lead to 37-25 at the half. He finished with 22 in the game. Diante Wood had 16 and Murdock Simmons had 14.

“We game planned and told them who the shooters were that we couldn’t leave, and they did the exact opposite of what we asked them to do,” Huff said. “We left (Nolan). You can’t leave him. He’s a shooter.”

After halftime is when the score got out of hand. The Cardinals went on a 15-3 run to open the third quarter to extend their lead to 52-28 before the Titans went on their big run.

“Sacred Heart is a really good team,” Huff said. “Probably a better team than anybody we are going to face coming into the next few games into the regional. I feel like we had a chance to beat them and could have beat them had not we started out so sluggish.” – The Gadsden Times
