WEAVER – The Weaver girls basketball team needed a win in a bad way.

The Lady Bearcats hadn’t won since their emotional run to the Calhoun County Tournament semifinals. It was almost if they expended so much energy in that drive there was nothing left.

Four games had passed without the taste of success, but they got back on the winning track Tuesday, jumping on Saks early and cruising to a 58-32 victory.

“We needed this win,” Weaver coach Gary Atchley said. “We just didn’t have any fire. I think they thought they had arrived.

“Being a young basketball team, being we hadn’t been anywhere, making a run like that took a lot out of us. It took three or four hard practices to try to beat in their head that we’ve got to get back to where we need to be. I think we played well tonight.”

Weaver was all over the Lady Wildcats early with a hard press. It help the Lady Bearcats open a 17-3 first-quarter lead and it was just a matter of what they were going to do with it.

Emily Reed scored all nine of her points in the first quarter. Rayne Beck, who is just getting back into form after taking a hard fall last week, led Weaver in scoring with 17 points.

Takeidra Borden led Saks with 15 points. Miracle Dennard had 13 on the strength of four 3-pointers.

Weaver’s Rayne Beck stays close to Saks’ Miracle Dennard. Denied hit four 3-pointers in the game.
