HEFLIN – Ben Glass has been fighting a season-long shooting slump, so he figured the best way to fix it was just get away from it for a while.

The Ohatchee guard, in what may be a move unprecedented in his career, put the basketballs away during the Christmas break and didn’t touch them for three days.

The result was a career-high 21 points Thursday in the Indians’ 62-42 win over Faith Christian in the consolation bracket of the Cleburne County Holiday Invitational.

Glass hit six field goals – two from 3-point range – and all seven of his free throws.

“It’s been kind of rough early on, I haven’t been able to get anything to go,” Glass said. “But I’ve been trying to stick with it because I knew I’d have a big game eventually.”

But it took stepping away to step up. Glass is the epitome of the gym rat. He had been shooting “non-stop” since the summer without any days off. He figured it was time to try something different.

He actually started to clear his mind about his shooting woes before the Indians’ final game in the Champions Sports Academy tournament and then went out and scored 12 points against Lincoln.

“Over the Christmas break we practice on the 23rd and (coach Bryant Ginn) gave us off Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the day after,” Glass said. “I just took those three days off and didn’t do anything. I didn’t really think about it. I tried to get my mind off it and the next day I got on the shooting gun and my shot was feeling a lot different than it ever felt.

“I started hitting a bunch of shots in practice and it felt really good.

His previous career-high was 20 during an in-school game last year at Wellborn.

For the second game in a row, the Lions let a close game get away from them in the second half. They had a 25-20 lead at the break, but were outscored 42-17 in the second half.

Glass had 11 for Ohatchee in the half and Grayson Alward had 10.

Sacred Heart 68, Jefferson (NY) 54 – The five starters did all of Sacred Heart’s scoring and three enjoyed double-doubles as the Cardinals rallied from an early deficit to score their second straight full-strength victory in Marietta, Ga.

Newcomer Dakota Myers had the biggest game with 12 points, 15 rebounds and two blocked shots. Diante Wood had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Kevion Nolan had 15 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

The Cardinals drew even after three quarters after trailing 21-14 early, then won the fourth quarter 23-9. They will play Spain Park at 9 a.m. local time today.

Grissom 52, Oxford 48 — The Yellow Jackets survived a slow start, two potential game-winning free throws with 10 seconds left and two potential game-winning shots in the final two only to fall in overtime in the consolation finals of the AL.com Classic in Huntsville’s VonBraun Center.

The Jackets fell behind 7-0 before scoring their first points on a Zondrick Garrett field goal with 2:05 left in the first quarter. The game was tied for the 11th time at 44 with nine seconds left when Willie Hall missed two free throws that would have given the Tigers the lead and forced Oxford to play for the tie or win. Instead, the game went into overtime.

Oxford led twice in the overtime, at 46-44 on Jakolbe McClendon’s only basket of the game and the last time at 48-46 on a Garrett putback. Grissom tied it, took the lead (on the 14th lead change) and then sealed the victory on Trey Nance’s bucket with six seconds to play.

Braden Mack led Oxford with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Garrett had 11 points, seven boards and two blocked shots.
