ALEXANDRIA (Nov. 22) — Chelsea Parker was a presence in the post, breaking out for 24 points and nine rebounds, to win MVP honors as Cleburne County held off Pleasant Valley 46-44 to win the Champions Girls Thanksgiving Classic Tuesday night.

Parker scored only four points in each of the Lady Tigers’ first two tournament games in the sparkling Champions Sports Academy gym. But she was a force down low in the finals, regularly putting herself in the right place at the right time for the many easy put-backs the winners converted.

“I went back and watched film of the first two games,” Cleburne County coach Todd Gable said. “She was doing great posting up, she just wasn’t finishing. So we went back, even today when we had her in athletics, and she worked real hard posting up and doing her stuff and it showed tonight. We knew she’d eventually break out.”

The game was back-and-forth throughout until Parker scored six straight points late in the fourth quarter to give the Lady Tigers (3-0) a 46-41 lead with a minute to play. She started the flurry with a layup that gave her team the lead for good, scored on a put-back after a turnover and finished off the run with another inside basket.

She had 14 of her points in the second half.

“I just had to practice more and just keep at it,” she said. “I know I was going to get there, but I didn’t know how soon it would be so I had to keep working. This is one the greatest moment. I’ve never gotten an MVP for basketball so this is really awesome.”

Pleasant Valley, looking to avenge one of its three losses from last season, rallied to make it a two-point game in the closing seconds and had a chance to tie in with less than a second to play in regulation. Leading scorer Atleigh Brannon went to the line for two free throws with three-tenths of a second left, but missed the first shot and never attempted the second.

Brannon finished with 24 points for the Lady Raiders.

The Lady Cubs came to the gym a little earlier than normal Tuesday to erase the disappointment of missing so many short shots in the semifinals the night before and won the consolation game convincingly.

Bre Bradford worked on her extension to the basket and it helped her outscore the Lady Indians by herself, going for 24.

“She converted better tonight, she made the easy ones,” Alexandria coach Craig Tucker said. “She’s to kind of a point where she can be as good as she wants to be. We want her to be real good but we push real hard every day.”

White Plains 46, Weaver 31

Grey Young hit three of her four 3-pointers in the first quarter and the Lady Wildcats were off and running. Young finished with 14 points. Shelby Wood added 10. Caleigh Cortez led Weaver with 11 points.

Faith Christian 47, Westbrook Christian 38

Kristin Covington and Sydnee Johnson scored 13 points apiece and the offense drained eight 3-point shots Lady Lions drained eight 3-point shots to finally get a win in the tournament. Johnson also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
