ONEONTA – Ninth-ranked Jacksonville scored one touchdown on a blocked punt and set up its only offensive touchdown with another in beating Oneonta 16-0 to clinch a home game in the opening round of Class 4A playoffs.

The Golden Eagles (7-0, 5-0) scored their first shutout since Oct. 10, 2014, and improved to 7-0 for the first time since 1999 when they enjoyed an undefeated regular season and lost in the second round of the playoffs. It was the second time this year the Redskins (3-4, 2-3) had been shut out.

The Jacksonville defense recorded eight tackles for loss, including six sacks, forced 18 incomplete passes and had four takeaways. Over the last two games it has had 22 tackles for loss.

The Golden Eagles played most of the game without running back Taye Ackles. The senior was held out for precautionary reasons after getting hurt on the opening series.

Nico Richmond rushed for 103 yards on 20 carries and scored Jacksonville’s only offensive touchdown on a five-yard run with less than five minutes to play. The score came two plays after John Harris recovered an Oneonta fumbled punt inside the 10.

The Golden Eagles got their first touchdown when Harris blocked a punt and Ben Patterson recovered the loose ball in the end zone.
