Wadley, Central-Clay County take sole possession of region leads; Handley throws its region into logjam after beating Munford

LINEVILLE – Camerun Peoples scored two touchdowns in the final six minutes, including the game-winner on a 12-yard run with 1:17 to play, as the ninth-ranked Volunteers rallied to beat No. 2 Beauregard and take the upper hand in the Class 5A Region 4.

The Vols (6-1, 4-0) are now the only undefeated team in the region and can clinch the region title next week with a victory over Sylacauga.

Peoples rushed for 246 yards on 38 carries and cleared the 1,000-yard mark for the season. He now has 1,053 yards through seven games.

His game-winning touchdown capped a 56-yard drive and a 20-point Volunteer fourth quarter.

WADLEY 62, VICTORY CHRISTIAN 7

WADLEY – Quae Drake scored three touchdowns, two on passes from Connor Fordham, and had more than 200 all-purpose yards as the sixth-ranked Bulldogs continued to overwhelm opponents.

The win, combined with Winterboro’s loss to Ragland, vaulted the Bulldogs (6-0, 4-0) into sole possession of first place in Class 1A Region 4.

Drake scored on a 77-yard punt return and on passes of 32 and 22 yards from Fordham. Actually, both of the Bulldogs’ touchdowns in the first quarter came on punt returns. They then erupted for 33 points in the second quarter for a 48-0 halftime lead.

Wadley came into the game averaging 45 points a game while allowing 12.5. The Bulldogs have never lost to Victory Christian, now 0-7. The 62 points and margin of victory were the largest in the history of the series.

HANDLEY 24, MUNFORD 13

ROANOKE — For the second straight year, the Tigers handed Munford its first region loss of the year.

The result throws the Class 4A Region 3 race into a three-way among sixth-ranked Munford, No. 8 Leeds and Handley at 4-1.

The Tigers (5-2) jumped out to a 10-7 halftime lead behind a 4-yard plunge from Spanky Watts and a 25-yard field goal from Hudson Burns. Munford (5-2) countered with a 47-yard run by Tacorrie Russell. The Lions were stopped once inside the 20 on downs.

Handley got a touchdown after Demarius Stevens blocked a punt. Joshua Hatcher scored on a 24-yard run to open up the lead to 17-7.

Munford came to life on an 82-yard run by freshman Zay Britt, who sprinted down the Lions’ sideline for a score to cut the lead to 17-13.

Handley took advantage of a fumbled punt by Britt midway through the fourth quarter. Watts got the final score from two yards out for the final margin. – Brant Locklier
