White Plains, Sacred Heart use fast starts, Weaver falters in second half, Saks wins opener

By East Alabama Sports Today

White Plains and Sacred Heart used the same approach to rebound from a close loss in their previous starts: Start fast and leave no doubt.

White Plains, which lost by two to Westbrook Christian in the Lincoln Thanksgiving Invitational final, scored the first 12 points of its home game Monday, jumped out to a 27-point halftime team and roared past Pleasant Valley, 67-28.

Sacred Heart, which lost by two to Holy Innocents in the Atlanta Hoopsgiving event, delighted its home crowd with a 51-14 halftime lead on the way to a 78-36 rout of Faith Christian.

Post Murphy Doss helped White Plains get established against the Raiders, scoring six of his 10 in the first quarter — and that was before the Wildcats (4-1) starting hitting from outside.

The Wildcats got nine 3-pointers from six players in the game. Jerod Guthrie had three of them.

Meanwhile, Sacred Heart already had control of its game when the Cardinals erupted for 32 points in the second quarter.

Diante Wood and Kovarri Ross combined for 19 points in the second quarter and combining for 13 in the first. Wood finished with 21 points in the game, while Ross finished with 17.

Jordan Griswould led Faith with 14.

Lincoln 72, Weaver 62

LINCOLN – The Golden Bears used a strong second-half effort to beat Weaver for the second time in a week.

Weaver used a big second quarter to open a three-point halftime lead, but Lincoln outscored the Bearcats 44-31 in the second half.

“We sucked it up tonight,” Lincoln coach Rush Rutledge said.

Dee Whiteside scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second half. Zay Caldwell had 19 points in the game and Tyler Hemphill added 10.

Delo Forbes led Weaver with 14 points, which included 10 of 13 from the foul line. Malik Arnold had 12.

Saks 62, Woodland 32

WOODLAND – For those wondering what kind of team Saks would put together this season after losing so much of its firepower from a year ago, the Wildcats answered the bell for 2015 with another strong outside shooting performance.

The Wildcats hit six 3-pointers in the game. Jaylen Britt, the sixth man on last year’s team, had three of them in his game-high 17 points. Newcomer Alphonsa Ward had two in his 12-point game.

The Wildcats opened a 15-11 first-quarter lead, then took control with an 18-4 second quarter. Ward hit both of his 3s in Saks’ 22-point third quarter.
