30 vie for County Senior title

A field of 30 players will hit the course Friday for the start of the 29th Calhoun County Senior Championship at Anniston Municipal Golf Course.

Former champions Ted Towns, David Martin and Doug Bragg are in the field.

The tournament moves to Cane Creek Golf Course for the final round Saturday.

Martin has won the event a record five times, with his last title coming in 2005. With his next title, he will join Chris Banister and Eric Hamilton with the most County major titles. Banister and Hamilton both have won six County Championships.

Here are the tee assignments (1 p.m. shotgun)

Hole 2 – David Martin, Mike Fincher, Norris Ray, Bob Mosakowski
Hole 3 – Steve Davis, Ott Chandler, Rick Dickson, Wayne Welch
Hole 4 – Chip Howell, Doug Bragg, John McKenzie, Allen Mangham
Hole 5 – Trapp Wheeler, Dave Dillman, Alan Heedt, Terry Brooks
Hole 6 – Amos Kirkpatrick, Andy Jenkins, Bill Curry, David Sanders
Hole 7 – David Gilley, James Beavers, Bill Turner
Hole 8 – Tony Prichett, Mike Hammonds, Ted Shultz

ACE IN THE CROWD: Will Brown scored a hole-in-one Thursday at Stoney Brook Golf Course. He aced the ninth hole from 169 yards using a 9-iron. The shot was witnessed by David Curvin and Craig Thornton and the feat now will be permanently listed in the area holes-in-one registry on the East Alabama Sports Today website.

DOWN TO 16: Jaylon Ellison made an early exit in the 14th State Match Play Championship at Cherokee Ridge CC Thursday, while Jacksonville State player Zach Contris made it through to the Round of 16.

Ellison fell to Sheldon Statkewicz of Mobile in the first round, 2 up. He won the first hole, but was 3 down through seven holes and again through 12. He got back to 1 down going to 18 when Statkewicz closed out the match with a birdie.

Contris, meanwhile, made it through to Friday with a 5&3 win over Austin Gean of Florence after drawing an opening-round bye. Contris, the 10th seed from Hokes Bluff, plays No. 7 Torrie Coghlin of Irondale next.
