ALEXANDRIA — Caleb Frazier is just the guy Alexandria baseball coach Zac Welch wants on the mound in gotta-have-it situations requiring grit, and Frazier proved it again Friday.
The junior relief pitcher came on with with bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 2 of Alexandria’s first-round playoff series with Etowah and delivered, inducing two pop flies to center field to save the Valley Cubs’ 3-2 victory.
That victory atop a 10-4 victory in Game 1 gave Alexandria the sweep and sent the Valley Cubs into the second round, where they will play host to Fayette County.
“Frazier is a hard-nosed kid,” Welch said. “He works at the trade school as a mechanic, and he’s got grease under his fingernails.
“That boy drinks from the hose pipe. I knew he was tough enough for that moment.”
