OXFORD — Bruce Downey’s goal with six minutes left made the difference, and White Plains’ fourth-seeded boys fought off an upset against No. 5 Saks in the Calhoun County soccer tournament Monday at Choccolocco Park, 2-1.
The Wildcats advanced to face top seed Oxford in Tuesday’s semifinals, marking a rematch of last year’s final.
“Saks brought it to us tonight,” White Plains coach Chase Cotton said. “They had a great game plan for what they wanted to do. They shut down one of the things that we do best, but Bruce was able to find a winner there.
“He’s been a game changer. He was tonight, definitely.”
Downy, who transferred from Donoho, scored the final goal with no assist.
“We were tied 1-1, and I don’t like losing,” Downey said. “I got the ball and had space, had to dribble past a couple of guys, and it was basically me against one defender towards the goal.
“I got the ball around him with nobody in front of me. I see a guy on the right, cut in, kick the ball to the right of him, take another touch. The guy slides by me, and just kicked it bottom left.”
White Plains also got a goal from Axl Jenkins.
Carlos Martinez headed Saks’ goal on a Luis Ramirez free kick.
FAITH CHRISTIAN 3, WEAVER 1: No. 6 Faith got two goals from Davis Morley and a penalty kick goal from Cameron Rogers on the way to pulling off an upset against No. 3 Weaver.
Faith will play No. 2 Jacksonville in Tuesday’s semifinals.
“We’re blessed to be able to play,” Faith coach Kacey Vickery said. “I’m so proud of them. We’re going to celebrate tonight and look forward to tomorrow.”
Faith turned the tables after losing to Weaver 9-1 last week.
“We just stayed competitive. That was the main thing,” Vickery said. “We played them last week, and it was a very different game. We watched the film and adjusted accordingly and put our heart and soul into it and played with a lot of pride tonight.”
Caiden McDaniel scored Weaver’s goal on a Gianluca Torres assist.
JACKSONVILLE 10, ANNISTON 0: Edgar Santillan and Christian Garner scored two goals apiece, and No. 2 Jacksonville advanced to face Weaver/Faith Christian in Tuesday’s semifinals.
The Golden Eagles got a goal apiece from Cameron Turner, Miles Sawyer, J.C. Hollingsworth, Colin Thurman, Tamirat Campbll and Cooper Morgan.
Jack Thomas dished out five assists, and Garner had two. Judah Jennings had an assist.
“We started off a little slow but picked it up,” Jacksonville coach Chelsea Mize said. “I’m proud of them. We played hard. We just came off of spring break, so we haven’t had a lot of touches.
“Anniston played us a little harder this time, and they held us for a little bit.”

Girls
WHITE PLAINS 10, WEAVER 0: Layla Garcia scored a double hat trick with six goals, and No. White Plains advanced to face No. 2 Donoho in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Selma Pascual scored two goals, and the Wildcats got one apiece from Brooksly Thielker and Kay Martinez, who also had two assists.
Savannah DeLoach had two assists. Kensley Jones added an assist apiece.
“The girls played OK,” White Plains coach Jamie Clendenin said. “We still have a little spring break left in us. We’re not passing the ball as well as it needs to be passed. Hopefully, we can get that under control tomorrow, because we play Donoho, and they’re really good.”
OXFORD 10, SAKS 0: Rachel Garcia had three goals and three assists, and No. 4 Oxford advanced to face top seed Jacksonville in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Skylar Brooks added two goals and two assists, and Tia Nichols added two goals. Naomi Endicott and Miranda Alvarez added a goal apiece, and Lani Gastelo had an assist.
“I’m proud of our girls,” Oxford coach Gersain Rodriguez said. “Our mindset was play to the style we want to play, this game and the remainder of the season. I think we got that done.
“We were a little bit sluggish playing on grass. This was our second game on grass, but the girls were able to adapt.”
