Alexandria’s boys lead Class 1A-4A through first day in Huntsville, and defending champion Weaver lead in 1A-5A girls’.

HUNTSVILLE — Alexandria’s boys stand in first place in the Class 1A-4A division after Thursday’s first-day action in the AHSAA state wrestling tournament.

The Valley Cubs, seeking their first state wrestling title, piled up 73 points and lead defending champion Tallassee (61) by 12. Reigning runner-up Weaver is third with 58.5 points.

Also in the top 10 are Cleburne County (tied-sixth, 31) and White Plains (eighth, 30).

Defending Class 1A-5A girls’ state champion Weaver stands in first place with 28 points. Lincoln, Cleburne County and Tallassee are tied for second with 12. Alexandria is fifth with 11.5 and Piedmont is sixth with 10.

Alexandria’s boys got eight wrestlers through to championship semifinals and has one alive in the consolation bracket. 

“A lot of wrestling left, but I feel they are keeping themselves in position to make a run on top five,” Alexandria coach Frank Hartzog said. “Proud of their effort today. …

“Never know what can happen here. Kids might be sick or have an injury they are battling through, so you always have a chance when you step on the mat, no matter who you’re wrestling.” 

The Valley Cubs’ semifinalists by weight class include Jeremy Lambert (120), Ryker Houston (126), Johnathan Santos (132), Jaden Whittaker (138), Dion Guy (144), Kion Guy (150), Ethan Maxwell (165) and Owen Cromer (190).

Christian Jones (157) remains alive in the consolation bracket.

Tallassee has six in semifinals and two in consolations.

Weaver’s five semifinalists include Haiden Hise (138), Dylan Brown (165), Gianluca Torres (175), Dalton Fink (190) and Zach Hooks (215). 

Peyton Andrews (132) and Gabriel Snyder (157) remain alive in consolations.

Cleburne County’s Jacob Biggers (132) reached the semifinals. Connor Causey (113), Owen Young (126), Cal Shubert (175) and Kendall Miller (215) wrestle on in consolations.

White Plains’ Lyric Brown (132), James Heard (157) and Hudson Ingalsbe (285) reached semifinals.

Lincoln leads area Class 5A teams in seventh place with 11 points, with Hunter Smiley (175), Joel Gaston (190) and Allen Thrower (215) in semifinals.

Piedmont’s Myles Bailey (113) has reached a semifinal, and Landon Stambaugh (144) remains alive in consolations.

Wellborn’s Noah Smith (106) and Kaydon King (150) wrestled into semifinals.

Class 6A boys started later in the day and haven’t completed the day’s matches. Oxford’s Dean Fargue (113), Christian Draper (165) and Kalazarus Harrison (285) in consolations.

Saks’ Tristan Garrett (120), Ohatchee’s Levi Sullins (106) and Pleasant Valley’s Ayden Pate (215) are alive in consolations

Girls

In girls’ competion, Weaver got seven wrestlers through to semifinals: Shyanne Scott (107), Ali Anderson (114), Jaylee Carter (120), Ashlyn Coleman (132), Ariel Sargent (138), Heaven Bishop (165) and Baleigh Brown (185).

Sarah Gokey (100), Ashawnie McKinney (126) and Calilyn Edmonson (145) remain alive in consolations.

“We wrestled really well, put seven of 10 into the semis and are leading by double second place,” Weaver coach Wynn Knight said. “Really great efforts from everyone.

“Shyanne Scott came back from 9-0 and pinned her girl. Then got pins at 114, 120, 132, 138, 160, and 185. Super proud of the way we competed in all 10 matches. Got some really favorable matchups tomorrow afternoon.”

Lincoln’s Au’Nahylaa Smith (114), Brooklyn Wigley (185) and Jailah McGowan (235) reached semifinals, and Evelyn Dobbs (120), Riley Stephens (132) and Alana Bragg (165) wrestle on in consolations.

Cleburne County’s Avalena Wiliamson (107), Layla Poore (120) and Falon Curvin (145) reached semifinals.

Alexandria’s Kamryn Buchanan (100), Elizabeth Hunter (114), April Perterson (145) and Emerald Hunter (165) reached semifinals, and Marlie Morris (107), Katelyn Robertson (132), Savannah Fischer (138) and Mia Arcos (152) wrestle on in consolations.

Piedmont’s Crimson Elmore (107), Laney Holis (138) and Ameria Fitten (235) reached semifinals.

Wellborn’s Bethany Fowler (138) is in the semifinals. Savannah Duncan (132) and Rosalie Alward (185) await consolation matches.

Oxford’s girls have four points in 6A-7A competion, with Carleigh Arriaga (165) in the semifinals and Blessin Bell (185) on consolations.
