Donoho’s girls open soccer season with victory over 4A state champion. Weaver’s nine goals help Jacksonville sweep Talladega. Falcons sweep Oxford in tennis.

ANNISTON — Brooke Vandiber scored three goals, and Donoho’s girls opened the soccer season with a 4-1 victory over defending Class 4A state champion St. John Paul II on Friday on Lentz Field.

Donoho also got a goal from seventh-grader Isata Sesay. Lauren Wigley had two assists, and Sophia Sanders had one.

JACKSONVILLE BOYS 5, TALLADEGA 0: Colin Thuman scored two goals, and the Golden Eagles opened with a victory under first-year coach Chelsea Mize.

Cameron Turner, Dion Harris and Josh Riggs added a goal apiece, and Jack Thomas had two assists.

JACKSONVILLE GIRLS 11, TALLADEGA 1: Emerson Weaver hit the hat trick … squared.

She scored nine of Jacksonville’s 11 goals and dised out two assists, and the Golden Eagles opened with a victory under Mize.

Willa Kate Walker added two goals and one assist, and Joeh Kim dished out three assists.

Tennis

DONOHO SWEEPS: Donoho’s boys and girls opened the season Thursday with victories over Oxford. The girls won 7-2 and boys won 6-3.

Donoho’s boys girls singles victories from Rishi Reddy, Foster Payton. Aiden Thompson and Chris Perkins and doubles victories from Reddy-Ethan Crawford and Perkins-J.R. Sobers. 

Oxford’s Asher Mitcham and Ren Bentley won singles matches, and Payton Butterworth-Colton Moxley won a doubles match.

Donoho’s girls got singles victories from Claire Tollison, Elizabeth Downey, Bentlee Pahman and Sydney Marsh. The Falcons swept the doubles courts, with victories from Avery Barnett-Natalie Rodgers, Downey-Pahman and Marsh-Harper Barnett.

Oxford’s Claire Maniscalco won No. 1 singles, and Charlie Lambert won No. 2 singles.
