ANNISTON — It’s no shock that Calhoun County coaches unanimously voted Jacksonville’s girls as the top seed for the coming county tournament.
It just doesn’t seem normal.
“Not to my knowledge, any time recently,” Jacksonville coach Corey Mize said. “I know it’s always been Oxford or Anniston.
“We are honored to have the one seed, and we’re not shying away from it. We just know anything can happen, so we have to be ready to compete.”
Jacksonville’s girls and Oxford’s boys will have the top seeds for the 75th Calhoun County Tournament, which runs Jan. 26-31 at Pete Mathews Coliseum. Both were unanimous picks by the coaches at Wednesday’s seeding meeting, held in Anniston High’s auditorium.
Jacksonville (17-3) is 7-0 against county competition this season and beat four-time defending champion Oxford 48-45 in Oxford’s only game against county competition this season. The Yellow Jackets (12-8), Anniston (12-5) and Alexandria (9-9) round out the top four seeds, which get byes to the quarterfinals.
Jacksonville holds Class 5A’s No. 6 ranking in the most recent Alabama Sports Writers Association poll.
Oxford’s boys (16-4) holds Class 6A’s No. 1 ranking after beating No. 2 Shades Valley 70-41 on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets have played no games against county competition this season but are widely seen as a prohibitive favorite in the county tournament.
“We are very honored to be voted as the number seed,” Oxford coach Joel Van Meter said. “We all know what the county tournament means to our communities and the players in Calhoun County.
“Seedings go only as far as the start of the tournament, and for us to be successful, we have to defend and rebound every night and play unselfish basketball.”
